Default E93 M Sport front license plate bracket

So I have another BMW suddenly (picture thread to come when weather stops sucking) and it doesn't have a front license plate frame. I'm hesitant to drill, but also not sure I like the offset tow hook plate mounts. Has anyone tried one of the other no-drill mounts or made something custom?

Default Sly Brackets

I'm pretty happy with the lower-grille mount from Sly Brackets I used on my M2C (slybrackets.com). It is a bit fiddly to install and is not quick-release, but it is more solid than the removable mounts I've seen in person.

It basically bolts big rubber-backed "washers" through the mesh in the lower grille that act as bases for two posts. Very adjustable. I added some stainless washers to fine-tune the placement closer to the bumper than was possible with the included spacers. Also, because the plate-mounting screws protrude a bit through the back, I added a self-adhesive rubber strip behind the top of the frame so the screws won't poke the bumper if the mount gets bumped lightly.

I've been driving without a front plate in Maryland for 2 years and no problems. I keep the plate in the Cayman's frunk.

I've contemplated doing that, but also had a friend get pulled over recently for it. The officers were looking for excuses to fill up their ticket books at the end of the month. So I've decided to get the regular mounting plate.

The bumper has enough dings and scratches on it from being parked in DC so when Maryland does finally get their act together and stop requiring front plates, I'll fill the holes and repaint the bumper.

In Virginia, I believe a lack of a front license plate is a secondary offense so it can't be used as a reason for a traffic stop. Speaking for a friend, 4 years of no front license plate on a Boxster and never pulled over for it.
