I've seen a few with a Supercharger added for more hp.. Some were reliable, some weren't.

The reliable conversions tend to be the ones that don't get driven much.......

I'm struggling to remember a turbo conversion that lasted a whole DE weekend. I have driven two supercharged conversions to failure in one session each. Neither were 20 year old cars.

You could get good power with a 3.2 rebuild to 3.4 or 3.5...that's another option. It'd look the same but pack an additional 50hp punch.

I had a student with a supercharged 993 at VIR. It lasted the weekend with no problems, but I don't think the car ever got over 90 MPH (older driver).

If you're DIY'ing, I hear now that there's a turbocharger with self-contained oiling system which sounds really awesome with no need for external plumbing. But I have no idea whether or not this is a proven technology.
Tom,
You da' man!
What kind of cheapest engine management system were you using, or which you would recommend?
Thanks.

Well, there's a BIG difference between the cheapest and what I really recommend. But of course every project has a budget and objectives so each conversion was done to the criteria. Directly to the point of some of the comments in this thread regrading converted forced induction cars are not reliable for road course track, IMHO, not all brands/models of cars are reliable for 20-minute HPDE sessions on road course to begin with(some over heats, some drops oil pressure, etc.) and certainly not all individual automotive components nor combinations put together on lower budgets are reliable for HPDE either. For all of the negative experiences there are the positive experiences to balance things out in the world outside of a P-car purist and road course track-focused type of forum.

So, the cheapest on any low boost conversion- use a pressure-rising fuel regulator on the return side of the fuel rail and retarding the base ignition timing manually by setting the distributor. This IS the cheapest fuel/ignition "management" method, its usually good enough for hard thrashing on street and 1/4-mile runs, but perfect example of not good enough for HPDE use.

Next step up is the get a MSD(or some other brand) boost ignition retard device and secondary fuel injector(s) which was very popular for 930/C2 Turbo cars with CIS(I think ANDIAL started this trend on 930's). When set properly, this then is good enough for HPDE.

Edit: Next step up is to replace stock fuel injectors with 36-lb or 42-lb or up to 72-lb injectors, add Bosch Motorsport fuel pump, and custom programmed EPROM chip for stock DME. This method is same level as OEM and RUF.

What I really recommend and want to do is a standalone ECU such as Motec, Haltech, Bosch Motorsport and dyno tune on a built engine. But this'd then turn a 1-week shop project to 6 months+ project and cost approach or at 6 digits including the engine build. Due to the extensive nature of this level of work only ~5% of the conversions were built to this level. Suitable for street, HPDE, club and pro racing. Seasoned companies such as TPC, IMA, Intersport, Jerry Woods, Kelly-Moss, AJR just to name a few have done such conversions with great success.

Cheap = Motor blows up. Right = Budget blows up.

Hey Tom,

Can't the oil gravity drain into the drain plug or tap into the bottom of the chain housing cover? A electric oil pump sounds sketchy.
