Late to the game (I've been off Dorkiphus for a month, 130 threads to catch up on).
Had similar but not identical problems after a rebuild on my '86. Would start about half the time by cranking it, but would start 100% of the time roll-starting it. Replaced many parts and it spent months in shops. Finally took it to Matt de Maria (Stuttgart Performance Engineering) at the insistence of Old T (remember him?). Matt heard the story and knew what the problem was, had it fixed in <2 hours (and made a customer for life). The flywheel sensor gap was 2.4 mm instead of the spec 0.8 mm.

To get to the flywheel sensors with engine in, jack up the rear or driver's side of the car, remove the rear wheel, and you can remove/replace/adjust/loosen the flywheel sensors with a ball-head Allen wrench. It can also be done with a straight Allen wrench, 1/6 turn at a time... If replacing, use silicone on the firewall gasket to get it back in place. I replaced both flywheel sensors at VIR one evening - with a straight Allen wrench so it can be done.

Actually, great timing. I plan to tackle the sensors this weekend.

Thank you for the note about the gap. Hopefully, that won't be the case, but at least I now know to check it.

Does the car roll-start easily? Might just be the gap. Or could be the sensors (which are not particularly expensive).

Well, I tried to replace the sensors. No luck.

They're the original wires and 33 years has them pretty well stuck.

The screws came out, and I can get them to spin a little, but there is no way to pull them out. I tried to wiggle and pull, but no luck.

I'll have to get a tow to a shop.

Any suggestions for a shop? In addition to the sensors, I'd like a simple check-up to know what may need attention.

I'm in Towson. Ralph's and SSI on Joppa Road have been suggested. Any thoughts on either of them?

Thanks for any advice!

Just to close the loop on this thread, the problem was the failure of the old speed and reference sensors.

The shop replaced them with an identical set of BMW sensors that I sourced that cost much less than the Porsche version, and it started right up!

Thanks for all the help!

This is the link to FCP Euro. I found they have good prices and quick service.

https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw...sch-0261210002

The BMW part number is 0261210002 and the part that I used was made by Bosch.

100% plug-and-play and half the price.

Cheers,

LS
