924s project
Some detail on my 924s project from my reintroduction post.
My son and I are learning from YouTube and other boards. It’s a slow process. Few pics. Mouse nests, etc.

Plenty to do still. But progress.
Bought car sight unseen. Lots wrong, but it’s solid. Suspension next. Goal is to be able to safely auto cross this season.

Dan, nice project. How old is your son? We have been casually looking for something that my 17 year old can slowly turn into a track toy but so far the pickings have been slim. Will be following your progress, enjoy

Thanks Racer. I review regularly! Along with the PET.
Patrick, my son is 15, couple months short of 16. Agree on choices. The 924s was a decent option I thought. Abundant parts with so many of the 944s out there. Very analog. I could have been smarter about my particular choice, but it’s ours now. Long list of to do, but it’s a riot.

Front and rear speakers this weekend. Fronts are plug and play if you get the mounting depth right. Not many options.
Rears a bit harder. Tried to do it first without removing window. No luck. The vinyl was wrapped around the metal canal of the window opening under the gasket. Popping the windows was surprisingly easy. Bending back the trim is delicate with 30 year old board and stretched vinyl. Pulled the old speakers. Not nearly as trashed as the fronts were but still wrecked. Got the new ones in fairly straightforward. Tested and had a bad vibration on passenger side. Reinstalled and it shook out. Getting the windows back in was a trick. Eventually went with the string method. After 3, 4 tries it popped in nicely. Maybe 30 minutes on drivers side and on 2nd go for passenger it took 90 seconds. Once you do it, it’s pretty intuitive. Sounds terrific. Infinity Kappa in rear. And RetroSound in front - they have a very minimal mounting depth.

Mention I also put on 205/65R-15 VREDESTEIN HITRAC ALL SEASON SL.
Seemed like a decent compromise.

Hat's off to you Dan for this post. It's good to see a young man learning how to fix things himself and get into working with their hands for something more than just tapping a cell phone. Having been where you are now 10 or so years ago, I'm proud that I have a kid who could take out and reinstall an engine in a 944 by himself when he was 16 years old. He can now fix just about anything on his race cars and is pretty self sufficient. His buddies look to him for help on their projects. Street cred that a kid can't buy. Plus, I have found a lot of satisfaction passing on things I have learned over the years. Keep it up and hopefully the two of you can have lots of car talk conversations that will alleviate the problem that lots of dad's struggle with to connect with their kids.
