Default New to Dorkiphus 944 tires

Hey crew, new to the forum, and new to Porsche. After a long search I found an early 944, a 1983 in Sapphire Blue. Love it. looking forward to learning from this forum as I fix items.

One question off the top - the car came with cookie cutters, and 225/60/15s. Too big a tire up front for my taste. Also, I found a set of 15x7, 15x8 Fuchs, and from what I can tell, even with this staggered rims, in 83 most came with 4 215/60/15s. But, I read that a rare option was 225/60/15s on the back with the 215s in the front. True? (I searched the forum, couldn't find info)

What are you all running on these early 944s with Fuchs? I'm more of a "OEM classic" than a performance look, so I'm not looking to drop to a 50 series or anything like that. Stock suspension.

Welcome Marcus, and nice looking car...

I'm not sure of the answer to your question, but even my 944 TurboS (heavier and more powerful) only came with 225 front and 245 rear from the factory.

Nice car. Glad to see another one show up. Getting that old dry cracked PPF off will be a bugger. May want to get some vinyl and cover it up as a quickie fix.

Early offset cars came with 7x15" cookie cutter or phone dial rims with 185/70-15 tires and were later changed to 195/65-15. The optional 15" x 7" and 8" Fuchs came with 215/60-15 tires.

Maybe a good option would be 215/60 on the front and keep the 225/60 on the rear. 15" tires are getting hard to find with a good variety among one style of tire. Don't be tempted by switching to a 16". It will kill the power of the car with the higher FDR.

As an FYI on the early offset N/A race car we run 8" rims all around with 245/40-15 with no rubbing issues even with the car lowered.

If you are looking for Fuchs I have several sets available from $700/set and up depending on condition and will be at the Carlisle swap meet.

Thanks @turbopooch - I’m not sure what if anything I’m going to do about the PPF. The whole clear coat is cracked, and original. The car is a true survivor, so I’m thinking of just leaving it! Thanks for the POV on the wheels. I was thinking of either going all 215/60/15 on all 4, or like you said with the 225 on the rear. But, seems like only the BF Goodrich TAs have both sizes. Don’t get me wrong, I love the look of them on an old vette, but unsure how they would look on a 944, even black walls out. I’ve already got a set of Fuchs, but thanks!
