R comp tire ramblings
Since most of the 40TW RComps aren't supposed to be exposed to freezing temps, how do the rest of you protect them during early month, cold track events where the temps are below what the tire can be exposed to?
Also, with that in mind, I'm about to order some new tires and how do I know they aren't sitting in some 30 degree UPS truck before I get them? Am I just being ridiculous?

Yes and no, you dont know....in fact they may even be sitting in a freezing warehouse somewhere now.
If possible keep em in the warmest place possible. If they freeze bring them up to a regular temp slowly, as in not sitting in the sun. If running in cold temps....start with higher pressures, slowly warm up and bleed off pressure till the day is warmer. I've run limerock race in the snow....no tire issues just be more gentle to them.

From what I understand, the main issue is mishandling when they are cold causes the tires to break the polymer bonds and prematurely develop cracks. Think of the rubber as not being able to flex when really cold if they are dropped, stretched, or flexed and the chemical bonds break permanently leading to cracks. Kind of like a caramel candy bar... when warm it can be stretched and gooey, but put it in the freezer and it snaps like toffee. Certain times of the year, Hoosier won't ship tires until it gets warmer and then they pack them in boxes instead of banding together. I remember hearing of some Corvette tires that were shipped in sub zero temps and the UPS guy unloaded them by throwing them out of the truck to the ground. Tires exploded when trying to pop the bead during mounting. Evan's advice is good and I have run the Turkey Bowl on Hoosiers in 40 degree temps with no issues other than crappy traction compared to a warm day. All of our tires are stored in a dark warehouse basement that is underground and never gets below 50 degrees.

Solid advice as always by Der ABT, and TurboPooch. I think another general concern would be I read the tires heat cycle out faster if they have been exposed to very cold temps. Any truth to that?

I can only speak to Michelin Cup 2’s. This information comes directly from the Michelin tire rep. The sub freezing issue is pure BS. The tires loose grip below freezing. The tire will not be damaged in any way until temperatures are below 15 degrees Fahrenheit.
I asked if you can drive on the Cup 2’s below freezing and the answer is yes, just slow down! The Michelin rep specifically addressed the Michelin Cup 2 OEM tires used on the Corvette in his presentation. At 15 degrees the tire will develop cracks if the car is moved. His advice was simply to not move the car until the tires are back up to temp. The Michelin rep is giving another presentation at Tech Tactics East this weekend, I’ll ask for an update and report any new developments.

What is this heat cycle thing you speak of.
Drive faster and they wont last long enough to count heat cycles... I can run down to cords in weekend if it's hot enough and I use the tire from the start of the weekend....about 7 heat cycles, granted 3 practices, 2 are 30 min races and 1 a 90 minute race but....you see time drops for sure.... I dont heat cycle on purpose that often....generally do stickers for qualy which technically heat cycles them over night. But in the past I havent noticed much difference from heatcycled vs just running time drop wise.

I may just re-use last year's tires that only froze a few times this winter if all this is accurate.

Should be fine, just keep an eye on them after each session if it makes ya feel better
One of the sets I used in practice had sat in the trailer and definately froze once, 1 session slippy were fine next

From what I have read and seen it is not how cold they get it is how cold they are when you stress them. Almost all the R comps need a wake up session before they return to their last used condition before any extended storage time.

Ditto ^^
I guess at some point, maybe the temp gets low enough to actually damage the stationary tire. But between 0ish and 20, don't move them. from 20ish to 32 they can probably be used on a car, but know the grip will be less, and baby them until they get some heat in them. I've driven R-comps (RA1's) on the street in sub-freezing, and they didn't explode, but didn't stick as well. HoHo's, etc. may be more delicate.
