Default Twenty Years of Autocross

October 7 was the twentieth anniversary of my first autocross. I remember the date because on the drive home I heard the news that we had started the war in Afghanistan. I was driving my '86 944, and Dirk D. was my first instructor. We had in common the fact that we were both Eastern Shore people, and I still remember him telling me not to cross my wrists.

Twenty years later, I still have a blast doing autocross. I've had a couple of FTD's over the years, and for many years I've been instructing, and occasionally telling people not to cross their wrists. Did an autocross with Chesapeake Region today and enjoyed the driving and the comradery.

Thanks to Dirk and all the other folks that have kept PCA autocross going over the years!

Happy anniversary. Keep paying it forward. I did my first autocross in, maybe April or May of 1990. Quite possibly in the same 914/6 I use these days (or possibly my mom's 1974 911S). Good times. Good club. Good people. Good program.

Fun to go back through the memories. My first autox was 1994 in our 1994 Acura Integra GS-R. MWSCC (or something like that) novice school at NSA.

My first PCA event wasn't until we got the 944 in 2003.

Cindy and I started autox in 1980, with my 240Z. Mostly SCCA stuff in DC and Baltimore regions. Belonged to the University (of MD) Sports Car Club (USCC). Very competitive group, winning several SCCA Team trophies; including both DC and Baltimore in the same year once. I won a couple C-Prepared trophies, and Cindy even won Ladies Class one year. My car became an ITS racer in 1985, when the IT classes were introduced in SCCA. Ran till 1987, when my first son was born. We were out of it till 2005, after buying our used Boxster S, to celebrate our 20th Anniversary, and joined PCA. Did it for about 9 years, including running Potomac's Autox program for 6 years. DE and racing took over after that, although I do sometimes miss it.

Thanks Mark, yup remember Autocrossing well, enjoyed and think it is a very worthwhile and fun. Was often a long way to travel for me for relatively short on course time, but good friends for sure.

I did my first autocross about 23 years ago, and my most recent this past summer. Both were with PCA. Zero autocrosses in between. But I had fun both times.

Resurrecting this old thread

My first autocross was in, I think, 1993. Driving a 1967 Porsche 912. Autocrossed that for many years and countless corners gone around with throttle steering. But I have also had a BMW 320i and a 1987 Porsche 928 S4 out there.

My first memory of autocrossing is from around 1980-ish, watching my dad Autocross that same 912 in Texas.

NSA parking lot, an old runway at the NSA, MARC station parking lot, some runway near Manassas(?), Camden Yards parking lot, Bowie Baysox parking lot, VIR, and on and on. Lots of venues, lots of cones, lots of fun.

I joined PCA in 1989 and on day 2 of my membership, I did my first autocross with Chesapeake. Got lost all four runs. Since then, I've managed to do at least two autocrosses a year even during those 12 years of Club Racing. I credit autocrossing with helping me learn new tracks quicker than friends who did not autocross. Still prefer to run my double digit horsepower 914 when possible.
