Just finished putting together a passive preamp using LDR's. All the hype about removing components from the signal path is true....details galore! I was using a single volume pot before and the difference is definitely audible.

No gain, only attenuation, so you'll need a source with 2VRMS output, or well matched/sensitive amp and speakers.

You can buy retail version here:
http://www.javahifi.com/

Or purchase the components and build you own. Same designer and circuitry used above:

That's awesome. I like the parts about the LDRs.

I thought you'd get a kick. I was intrigued as well, and at ~$200 it was worth tinkering with.

Following the links the 'LDR' looks like a old CdS photoresistor w/ a light source glued on top? Unsurprisingly there are no datasheets. I wonder the linearity...

I ordered one of these just before they ran out (thought about ordering 2 for mono blocks, but it was more money than I wanted for "play").

^^ I've been getting emails about those also, but already have SS amps as well as "low" wattage.

I did bite the bullet last week to see what the Class D hype is all about. TI has their TPA325x series evaluation boards available for 50% off with coupon code "highpoweraudio". I ordered the TPA3251 (170W stereo) and received it yesterday. Connected it to a simple switching power supply and in 5 minutes was listening. It sounds very nice, seriously. +80% efficiency and more power than I can handle. $110 minus the shoebox I stuffed it into, it can't be beat. Would make a great foundation for bedroom/secondary setup, and I'd honestly be happy with it if it were my only amp. Class D is the way of the future, and folks like PS audio are already using this technology (ICE Power chips) in their "audiophile" quality amps/lineup.
