What's the more preferable/popular choice for home defense these days? Shotgun or handgun?

Several of each, of course!

some things to consider. rounds that are too powerful can shoot through walls and become friendly fire depending on who/what is in the other room. the sound of a pump shotgun may get the attention from your home invader (not sure if thats good or bad). if you bring a gun into the picture, you better be sure you are ready to pull the trigger. hesitating could mean you get shot by your own gun. guns locked in a safe in the basement do nothing for self defense when your bedroom is two floors up and the alarm goes off. that being said, you live in VA. go buy as many rifles and shotguns as you want. buy a handgun now and start familiarizing yourself with it. this gives you something to do while you wait for your CCW permit, which can take a while. plenty of firearm owners in these parts that might be willing to take you shooting and some ranges have rental guns (and not just handguns either). try before you buy.

Better answer is whatever you are comfortable and competent with. I like the shotgun and shovel approach. If physical security is an issue a handgun is easier to lock in a nightstand box.

Depends on what you're defending against. If it's Zombies, a shotgun is handy for close quarters. If you're outdoors, flame thrower and/or chainsaw are preferable; forget the handguns, small arms fire just pisses them off.

for outside zombie work, i like the chain saw on the end of a pole (a pole pruner; stihl makes a very nice one). you can swing it around in an arc to cut off zombie legs before they get close
for inside, whatever you are comfortable with. i like a handgun w/no safety, and hollow point bullets that expand on impact to decrease penetration (through walls) while causing maximum tissue damage. |
