Is anyone, non-dealerships, repairing 991’s yet? I mean real repair not replace till the problem goes away.

I just had a Coolant System Failure Indicator on my MFD. Last time this happened it was a COV (Change Over Valve), the car has 7 of these and when any fail the first indicator is the Coolant System. The previous repair was under CPO so I have no idea how much this will cost (though I will soon find out) - they replaced 3 COVs at that time.

I have taken the car to Porsche of Tyson’s for an estimate. What I am looking for in this thread are alternatives, not sure if any of the indies have made it to the fault isolation and detection level on the 991 platform. And is anyone doing this at home in their garage? The COVs are relatively cheap (less than $20 each) and are a very common problem with this car, has anyone has figured out how to isolate these for replacement?

I would consider calling Jose Herceg at Autobahn. He typically knows the newer cars pretty well.

No reason why you cant DIY, if you want to. I've read about this but havent touched one. Seems pretty common and some just replace them all 'because they are cheap'. Not so analytical. You could test each solenoid with 12v but I'd rather get the actual values from a durametric or similar. Sorry I dont have first hand experience, just reading up.

That’s a good thread - I posted in it last year lol. COV issues are such a pain in the 991.1. The GTS (or S w/power kit) has 10 COVs compared to the 8 in the base or S, even more to fail!

I had a 2012.5 991.1 S and the COVs were changed with a “campaign” in 2013. I still had two COV related failures after that, in 2014 and 2015 (I owned the car from 2014-2016). The heater failed and then later the PSE (Porsche Sports Exhaust). Once those COVs were fixed, I never had a problem again.

I also had a 2013 991.1 S with powerkit (owned for a a little over a year, 2016-2017) that never had any problems. I think that once you get the latest version of the COVs changed, they seem pretty reliable after that.

Thankfully, I have not heard of any COV issues on the 991.2s.

Yes, this is the part. You may also see that I was on that Rennlist thread. The trick is; a) figuring out which COV is bad, b) locating it, and c) replacing it.

I ended up with 2 dead COVs that got replaced for a little over $500, that was the easy part. The really bad news was the vacuum pump, that cost another $1000.

Vacuum pump you ask? This is due to the Coast and Auto Start modes. Apparently they had to add an external pump so that a proper vacuum could be maintained when the engine is shut down. Progress...

I saw 2 991's on Chapman's lifts a few weeks ago. Chapman auto works sterling.
