Post "M" caliper info needed

i have a 5 lug conversion on a 914 that has "M" calipers (3" bolt spacing). i need some information about the years and models this caliper was fitted to. i am searching for parts (pads and pistons and tie rod ends and sources with good pricing) and the start of most of the searches is by year and model. in trying to exorcise a noise, i am first rebuilding the front calipers (theory: dragging pad) and in the process, the piston face towards the pad backing is messed up; looks like someone broke the circular raised area like they tried to use it to remove the piston or rotate the piston and chipped some off. i don't know how important this "arc" is; it's the part of the face that has to be set at an angle (probably not clear but...). my noise is a vibrating sounding noise that occurs occasionally that i can stop by tapping the brake pedal and also by giving the steering wheel a jerk left or right. the noise will come back almost right away but does not happed constantly.

recommendations for pads also appreciated (mostly street, want low dust, am signed up for an Aug DE)

if rebuilding doesn't get rid of the noise, i will look into front bearings next (how do you remove that hub? jazz tool) but that will be another thread.

'75 was what I thought too. If you don't have them yet let me know I'm clearing out the shed and think I have a couple. If I recall fronts use banjo fittings to attach to line so be sure you get ALL the parts if you are sourcing them.

The raised area does keep the pad from vibrating. Perhaps it was at the wrong angle?? How badly is it broken. The quick rule of thumb is to think of how the rotor is traveling. The two edges of the raised parts will be perpendicular to the rotor travel (form a radius of the rotor), so the inner surface is at the center of the opening on the caliper, and the outer one is just a little up.

Why not post a photo of it?

These things are ~$70 rebuilt from most places like Autozone. Don't spend a lot of $$ and time buying kits, rebuilding and then worrying about busted pistons boy-o

edit: they come nice a clean too

I know S calipers use the banjo. Are Ms the same way too? Can't say I've ever seen one up close.

It's been a year or two since I did the brakes on the Targa, but I don't think the M's used banjo fittings. If I remember I will peek when I get home.

the ones on the car do have banjo fittings. i'm going to rebuild these and see if they get thru the DE. i searched for pistons and found they are about 32$ each so i'm already near autozone calipers (4 x 32 ~ 2 x 70) not factoring in shipping, thanks for that info.

the piston raised arc is fairly bad but can't post a pic since i put it back together and am going to mount this afternoon. if the other one (not yet unmounted) is as bad, i'll post a pic.

DR: i will help you clean out the shed.

one of the reasons i'm putting these back on is the limited amount of time before the track event and desire to have this all sorted out before the track inspection.

Jim, I'll be out back working on the SC all weekend. Swing by and we'll do an S&D search and discover in the shed.
