So...the letter and check above came in the mail for my elderly aunt (she has dementia and I'm her legal guardian).

Obviously this is a scam - but damn, that fake check is looking mighty convincing - it has the colorshift background, anti-copying features, watermark on the back, and even printed check security features! The only thing it lacks in the microprinting (which is mentioned in the security features strangely enough.)

I called the BB&T branch in Calhoun, GA, and they said they are getting tons of those over the last several weeks.

I've blotted out the name of the (apparently legit) business in the payer area, as they are innocent bystanders in all likelihood.

Because fake checks are looking so convincing, this is why many people won't accept bank cashier's checks anymore.

PS. the signature on the letter is President James A Garfield's!

Your lucky! Garfield hasn't been in office for quite a while, that signature can't be good for much longer! Better hurry, it did say last notice.
