I wouldn't. just in time rebuilds are less $$$ than ones after something goes horably wrong!

1) running a motor with a spun bearing can lead to expensive additional damage, 2) once the motor is out of the car a rebuild isn't actually that time-consuming. in the time it takes to R&R everything, you're pretty far along in the rebuild...

Since the motor is on a pallet and the issue is known about I will open it up to look at the bearings and crank. I really like the idea of putting some good money into the motor so it's a known quantity. It's not like I don't have the time. I'll have a nice clean motor to put in the rsr. Thanks guys.
Any other mods I should do while the case is open?

Make sure you change the valve guides. A common mod is RS cams and intake valves.

Have you actually rebuilt a 993 motor?

sort of. have definitely R&R'd a couple of 'em, and rebuilt a bunch of earlier motors.
what i'm saying is this: Dude A has a 993 motor sitting in front of him. Dude B has a 993 motor in a car. Now start a stopwatch. Dude B has to R&R his motor. Dude A has to tear down and rebuild his motor. How far along in the job will Dude A be in the time it takes Dude B to R&R the motor? I would argue, "more than halfway." That was my point. |

Takes perhaps 3 hours to pull a 993 motor and trans. Lets say it takes an extra hour to put it back in. I do not want a motor that was rebuilt in 7 hours. Teardown is about 8% of a rebuild. Hell, just cleaning and inspecting all the reused parts takes far more time than the motor pull itself.
Matters not, as discribed I too would would tear the motor down too. I bought a pig in a poke motor. Got it from someone that got it from someone. Stuffed it in the car and fired it up. Has not missed a beat yet. Cleaned out the injectors and put in some new spark plugs after a fuel filter failure, bolted in a set of new ex side lifters is about it so far.
