I've had this Makita saw for probably 30+ years. The lever that locks the cut depth adjustment in place won't tighten down unless I rotate it 180 degrees clockwise from where it is sitting now. That doesn't do any good, because then the cut depth is zero.
Anyone have a clue how to fix this?

Hi John - I'm guessing that the locking mechanism has been goofed up since you've owned it?

John,
Is there a grommet or bushing that may have deteriorated and fallen out that may have been what allowed tightening of the lever, without the bolt going all the way down.

Ive had to swap bases on my old skil saw when the mag base broke. The thumb lock on mine is just captive to the nut that tightens the adjustment. You should be able to pull it apart reclock the thumb lock to where you you like. I would agree that a bushing/washer that rides along the rail may have been lost as the lock should move 90 Deg before it tightens.

Lol, I ran into this same problem on my Mikita saw yesterday. It locks fine with higher angles, just not when at “0”. I’m going to put in a shimming washer (if I can get the nut off!) we’ll let you know if that works.

Remove the small screw that holds the tear drop shaped plate. Turn the nut 1/6 rotation tighter. Reinstall the teardrop plate and screw.
