Mostly over-heating of both the pads (melting) and fluid. People do get by as mentioned but bleeding them after ever session or every day. In my case I must of melted the fronts. I think the e46 spec series requires their use but those cars are maybe 500 lbs lighter and 120hp less.

Proper ducting helps too, I run the Hard motorsport kit on my SE46.

Yup - that is the only reason I let the dust shields on. That and I did not want to take the bearings out and apart.
