Clutch job NB Miata - on mid rise lift
Time for a new clutch on the wife's 2001 Miata. Is this advisable on a midrise lift? I don't damn near every job on my 944 but all the busy parts are on the ends. I backed it in and it look like (with some hassle) I could get the transmission off. Anyone done this or have other useful advice?
I guess a transmission jack is a must have? Sent from my moto z4 using Tapatalk

Easier on jackstands, too much of the lift is in the way.

Blah. I'll have to see how high I can get it on jackstands....as in, can *I* get myself under anymore?

Pick it up with the lift, set stands then pull the lift out?
Method 2. Park the front on the back 1/2 of the lift and secure the car to the lift. Set the contact pads as far toward towards the middle of the lift as possible. Jack the back up while lifting the front with the lift. You will end up with the front higher than the back (hence the need to secure the car to the lift). Once up jack stand/prop all four corners. If the lift is a bolted to the floor type just jack stand the rear. This gives free space under the trans area so you can unbolt and drop it using a cheap motorcycle jack. Mid rise lifts trend towards wheel and susp work but you can push the envelope with clever positioning and “off label” methods. The above is for novelty use only. Do not try this at home. At work it will get you fired.

I had to read that 6 time to get the gist of what you meant.
My uncle in law got crushed under a mid rise doing some hillbilly refreshing on an S10 he was flipping for fun and profit so I'm always a little concerned with it tipping. Before I dive in, I'll get the jack stands out and see what kind of height I can get. I did my first engine drop with just jackstands (and a lot of help!) |

Despite my inherent frugality with most things automotive, I've found that for Miatas, the shops (there are a few and almost all are great) near Summit Point do things so quickly and inexpensively, it is easier for me to just let them do it. Only downside is that it is a 1 hour+ drive.
So, if the mid-rise lift is a problem, PM me for recommendations.

Trans is on the bench before you are back from dropping it off
But I get it, not bad advice at all to have a race shop pop in a clutch

you could supplement the height of stands using cinder blocks.....use at your own risk tho. Good Luck with the Swap!

Blocks work best if 2x6 laid flat across them. Still think timbers make the best slackers. Heck they put ships on them in dry dock.
