Question MD state inspection recommendations?

Hello. I just moved to the area and I’m looking for a place to do the MD state inspection on my daily driver ‘82 sc. The first place was afraid to jack it up. It’s slightly lowered (euro specs) with 17” wheels, so nothing too crazy IMO. Does anyone have a shop that does state inspections and is more used to dealing with cars of this age and type? I’m in the Bethesda area. Thanks in advance!

If you are up for a drive, SSI in Parkville, MD can do it and I don't think they will be afraid to jack it up.

A place closer to you that I have used in the past on my 911SC was the BP on River Road in Potomac, 10140 River Rd. Not sure if the guy that knows SC's is still there though.

For the front, I like jacking the car up by the crossmember.

For the rear of the car, you can use the factory jack points, or the lip right in front of the rear torsion bars.

Wildwood Exxon

Ask for Roberto and tell him exactly how you want it jacked

I’ve used him on more than one occasion.

20 years old or older you an register as historic, no inspection required but you have some use restrictions.

Thanks for the tips. I’ve been tempted to register it as historic for years but never wanted any use restrictions.

Just register it as historic. I and many others use historic registered vehicles as daily drivers all the time. In the last 4 years they cracked down with a new law, but nothing has really come of it. Still just as many historics running around.

xX on registering as Historic. I only know of one person nailed for using Historic tags, but it was many years ago, and was because he kept driving past the same trooper who sat in a regular spot to watch for speeders. If you don't consistently go past the same cop day after day, they probably won't bother you. I've seen minivans on the road nowadays with Historic tags, and none appeared to be concourse clean.

I was wondering about MD's enforcement on historic tags. A few years back there were rumblings that they were going to start enforcing, and I recall someone here on Dorki getting nabed. But I see clear violations daily with pickups/toyotas etc. I was wondering if they were not enforcing the regressive tax side of things, but still going after the higher end cars being used as DD's.

+2 on either BP in Potomac Village or SSI.
+4 on just registering as historic and avoiding inspection, emissions checks, higher registration costs, etc.

I think they have to "prove" you're using it as a daily driver, to fine you. So likely, only if some cop sees you repeatedly. Otherwise, the only other time I can think of is if you get pulled over for some other reason, and they ask why you're driving it. Historics are only supposed to be used occasionally, for events and fun drives. But if they catch you leaving the office, you can say your DD is awaiting parts or service, so you're driving the Historic in the meantime, which I believe is allowed. Risk is there, but likely small. Take different routes, park underground or in different spots, and you're probably fine.
