Default A few things to know before stealing my 914

Fun article from Hagerty: https://www.hagerty.com/media/advice...-steal-my-914/

I haven't owned a 914, but I've owned a couple of cars with their own similar idiosyncrasies.

That was awesome!

Reminds me of the '82 Saab 900 Turbo I had years ago. If the floor mounted ignition didn't confuse any thieves enough, a number of other things would...

My mom had a few Saabs back in the day, in Texas no less. They were strange birds in that locale for sure. My first car, a '79 domestic conversion van, did this awesome thing where it would shut itself off every morning on the way down a steep hill that terminated at a stoplight at a heavily trafficked intersection. Standing on the now power unassisted brakes was not a figurative term. Every morning.

Reminds me of driving my 1964 Mercedes 220 to school in the late 90s. Put the clutch in to downshift on the exit ramp from 495 to Telegraph Rd and it shut off. Every time. Easily remedied by dropping into third and letting the clutch back out tho.

In the case of that car, assuming a thief could get it started, they’d be totally lost as to why there were three pedals and a shifter on the steering column.

That was a great article!

Back in the day, the key from my 72 240Z was so precisely worn, that I discovered I could unlock and start virtually any Datsun from that era that used the same key blank.

Fun read, but it missed one of the quirks of my 914 -- unique to 1974 models. They came from the factory with seat belt / ignition interlock. Wouldn't start until the driver's seat belt was bucked. Passenger's too if the sensor detected weight in the seat!! Sophisticated stuff for the early 70's.

So much truth in such a short article. Since I've put mine back on the street, I've had no fewer than ten (10) offers to purchase the car. I just tell them I use it to embarrass BMW drivers on the freeways. Which I do, often.
