I had a great DE experience with my 996, until I didn't.

That being said, when my motor failed, it had over 100K miles on it, and it had been taken apart for a rebuild. So, one might expect to get better results from a motor with only 10K miles.

What happened to your 996 engine after your motor was rebuilt ✌️

Work was done by Protosport (an indy Porsche shop in Northern NJ). Anybody aware of the shop?
I have not heard of that shop. But, I bet some time on Rennsport would find some reviews.

What's nice about it being a 996 motor is that it most likely works well (reasonably) with the '01 Box ECU. I'd expect fewer issues with that setup than I would with them trying to make a 997 mill talk with the 986 ECU.

That said, I'd be curious to see if the 996 motor breathes as well in the 986 engine bay. Much of the x51 package (at least on 997s) is intake/header related, and those will both be sensitive to airflow.

Similarly, I do wonder about cooling. The 996 engine isn't that much bigger than the 986 motor, but I don't know if the 986 packaging wouldn't have it run hot.

And you, like everyone, knows about the 996 IMS issues. Hopefully taken care of before they put it in the chassis, but something to be on the lookout for.

Lastly: what transaxle are they using? I'd imagine the bigger difference (than hp, which seems to be only ~20 or so gain) would be around torque. Will the Box gearbox (which IIRC seems to be a weak spot on the Spec Box cars) handle added torque? And how does it play with the Box's classically long gearing?

The short version is that there was evidence for a #1 rod bearing failure. In June 2018 I got codes saying the camshaft timing was off. With just over 100K miles on the car and a desire to continue with DE, I had an area shop pull the motor and do an extensive rebuild. Got the car back in spring 2019. Did four or five DEs that year and two in 2020. The second was July 4th weekend at Road America. The motor blew on Sunday afternoon. Dissection afterwards revealed a failed #1 rod bearing.

Guys, thanks for all the input. I passed on the car. It's on the PCA.org web site, still for sale. Owner is willing to meet half-way (which I assume would be Delaware just this side of the twin-span) for someone to see the car in person and drive it.
