Default preparing the 06 boxster for 17 year old boy

I promised his mother I would make the car relatively safe before I give it to him, so I am thinking a set of all season performance tires, and a complete brake job

Otherwise, I think the car is well sorted

I did not know there was a tire category for all season performance tires, LOL, I have only looked at extreme summer performance tires before

Continental Extreme Contact DWS 06 is what I am planning on

They should be a good all round tire for Ohio weather, as well as keep his speed down

Now for the brakes

I cooked them well over the years with AutoX and HPDE use during the first few years

Depending on expense, where can I send calipers to restore like new?

Would a DIY rebuild kit be good enough?

I will be replacing rotors and pads and brake lines

Thanks for any feedback

Otto

Your 17 year old needs a booster seat?

As for calipers...you can rebuild them yourself for a lot cheaper - but if you haven't done it before, you may need compressed air to pop out the pistons, and it is a messy job. (Keep any brake fluid vapor away from paint!)

i guess, it is just clean and replace the o-rings and piston dust covers

how does one clean them without a parts cleaner? dishwasher? LOL! soaking?

Yeah pretty much. If the pistons are scored you may also want to replace those

You could look online for newer calipers that may be available from parts cars or take-offs from people installing big brake kits. They are not that expensive. Or you could just buy a big brake kit for the kid..

Making it safe? Pull a few plug wires.. no kid needs a 300hp sportscar

All seasons would be fine.. until it gets snowy and icy (which I think it does in Ohio), then dedicated snows would keep him even safer. All seasons, as we know, do nothing really well. I also doubt that all seasons will "keep his speed down".. lolz.

Unless the calipers are sticking, or it relieves guilt, you likely could leave them as is. Just flush and new pads and rotors. Tires. Alignment. Other maintenance current? - belts, waterpump? motor mounts? top working? Does the boy know how to do some general maintenance or will it be "shop" maintained going forward. Might be more spendy than a 17y/o can afford so maybe its worth a 3rd party lookover (ie, a PPI) to see what issues the car has that you've grown used to or blind to. Apples to oranges here, but my new driver is not a "car kid".. so I find the need to remind or do the basics to keep his car going.. Other than adding gas, or maybe air to the tires, he's just not into cars (yet?). if yours is the same, it might be good to get a clear baseline before shipping it off to Ohio.

Thanks for the feedback everyone

It is 284hp new and with 86k+ on the car, doubt it still has it

But it does make me wonder if there is a chip or some attachment that I could install to lower that power level for a new driver

Does anyone know of something like that?

As I said the car is well sorted

It needs fresh engine mounts, brake lines, rotors and pads

You can tune just about anything how you want it, maybe default to valet mode?

Pop out the pads and look at the calipers. Brittle boots/seals or leaking, rebuild. Else, bleed and install pads and put the wheels on.

Big rubber door stopper under throttle pedal.

Available at Ace Hardware - about 2 bucks.
