Default Disposting of a Li Ion Battery. Harder than it should be

Doing some post Xmas closet cleaning and we found my daughter's old tablet. Been missing for years. Well, she brought it to me, and the battery was so swollen, it has pushed the screen half off.

I am well aware of the severity of this and verrrrrrrrrrry happy something bad didn't happen while in her closet.

That said I am having zero luck finding a way to safely dispose of it. Any ideas where I can unload this ASAP? Pref Loudoun / NoVA?

- Since it is swollen, I cannot drop it off at HD or Lowes
- Batteries and bulbs won't touch it.
- Loudoun County Hazardous Materials only does once a month drop offs in random parking lot across the Co and the latest schedule has not been determined.
- The e-cycle places won't even go near it.

How are people supposed to safely dispose of this. The layperson would certainly throw it in the trash and call it a day...........dumb.

A little bit more of a drive for you, but Fairfax accepts e-waste six days per week at the I-66 transfer station.

Says it's only for Fairfax residents but I don't recall them checking when I've gone there. Granted, it's been a few years.

My dad lives in Fairfax and may use him as a second resort. I have a buddy in PWC that said he can dispose of it while I am out of town this weekend.

If you're meeting up with anyone from MontCo, our transfer station is FANTASTIC and would happily take it. Just look for a Maryland plate parked nearby and leave it on their car with a note!

If they see a Loudoun county sticker they'll know.

Any Best Buy should take it and recycle it for you.

The key issue is the fact the battery is swollen and is volatile. If it were in 'no problem' state, I could drop it off at most any HomeDepot or BestBuy.

If they are punctured, they start nasty fires..........Look at the latest news on the Tesla's with their Li Ion battery igniting.

Take it out into the back yard and stab it with a shovel. Once “discharged” it is no longer haz mat.
