Monday, I spent time doing more disassembly. No surprise discoveries, just old, dirty car parts.

Tuesday, we pushed the car into the driveway, and I spent some time getting very wet, washing as much dirt and debris out of the frunk, gas tank area, engine compartment and under the rear trunk as I could. Didn't take any pics of this, it wasn't any fun.

Yesterday, I decided to tackle the triangle of holes in the frunk. Here's the starting point:


First step was to cut out the "web" between the holes, since it'll be easier to install one larger patch than three smaller ones.


Then, I made a cardboard pattern by placing a piece of cardboard behind the hole and tracing the hole with a pencil. I cut out the pattern, traced that on a piece of sheet metal and cut that out. Here's a pic of the filler tacked in place:

This morning, my son helped me remove the rear window and decklid. Found another (minor) DAPO gift -- at some point, they stripped the threads in the welded-in nut in the decklid bracket. Rather than fix it properly, they just drilled out the nut and dropped a bolt down through the bracket. So, I need to see if I can put a helicoil in the nut or if the hole is now too big and a new nut must be welded in.

After lunch, Chris N. came over again, and helped weld up all the extra holes in the firewall. We also wire-brushed the rusty areas under the rear window and on the sides, and then treated them with Loctite Rust Converter. After the coverter dries, those spots will be primed and painted.

Also, the cans of touch-up paint arrived from Paintscratch.com. Surprisingly, it took UPS only two attempts to deliver the box -- recently, UPS has been having problems and one box took nearly two weeks of delivery attempts before I got it.

Anyway, the trunk and gas tank area look much better. The grunge on the dividing wall is old glue that I'll worry about when I re-glue the carpet back on.

The price was okay. If I had known about all these "special touches", I would have pushed harder for a better price. That's the drawback of buying a car remotely without any PPI.

The solutions (unfortunately) won't be anything spectacular, just basic grunt work to fix the holes and other issues, and to get the car running properly again.

Yes you can.

Once you've uploaded pics via "Manage Attachments", click the Paperclip icon

where you'll see your uploaded pics listed. Select the pic you want to put inline with your text. Apparently each pic gets assigned a number, and it appears in your text between ATTACH bracketed code. If you don't select any via the paperclip, all the pics just get appended after the end of your text.

Alternatively, if your pics are online, you can click the "Insert Images" icon

where you can enter the pic's URL, and it'll appear inline with your text.

Looks like a fun project. Dealer installed AC was a study in how quickly a junior mechanic could get it done. Measure? Too much time! Hole saws and cutoff wheels in angle grinders on brand new cars.

BTW there is such a thing as a rust free 914. I have a lovely gem of a 1975 914 on the lift right now. A blush of surface rust in the rear trunk most of which is stain and not even close to a rust through. This one also was subjected to the indignity of dealer AC which is still all there.

Certainly a bevy of previous owner upgrades over the past 47 years. Not all make sense, but well, not too surprising either. I like the fixes you've made so far and well, you'll have time to work on a few more. I like it. In a way, compared to your 1.7, you might take more lee way in how to "restore" it. Make it modern comfy? AX biased? or just daily driver.

I just spent some time putting back the stock steering wheel and the removable interior pieces on my -6 as I think beating on a 50 year old car at Ax may not be the best thing for it or me. Who knows, might even bother to wash and wax it (although its the washing that causes the rust!).

It doesn't seem like I accomplished much today, but it took all day to do it.

I installed a new retractable antenna. Had to leave the old antenna base grommet, since the area of affected paint is larger than the new base.


Then, I removed the windshield wiper assembly. I cleaned up and treated the rust around the wiper post holes. Then, I disassembled the wiper assembly and cleaned and greased the posts.


Hopefully, tomorrow I'll be able to paint around the post holes and then Sunday I'll be able to reinstall the wiper assembly.

I also installed new hoses for the window washers, while I have easy access under the cowl. At some point, I'll install an electric pump for the washer.
