Default Harmonic balancer failure

Car is 1997 Lexus sc300.

Strange first time experience for me. My belt started squeeling the other night. When I was able to get in and take a look, it appears the harmonic balancer has failed and the pulley has backed out. One of the fan blades is sitting on the pulley and hence fan not turning. I ordered a new harmonic balancer and belt. That part I can manage.

My question. With the fan just sitting there not turning, yet the water pump pulley turning with the belt, should there be any issues with the water pump?

Any thoughts appreciated.

I havent touched one of those in a long time. The water pump is driven by the engine belt and not the timing belt? IIRC. If the pump is moving and the fan isnt, because of interference with the crank pulley, you are ok unless the fan clutch let go.

Fan has a temp regulated clutch so the water pump should be ok. The fan and clutch should be checked over. You might have lost enough of the fan blade to cause sound or balance issues

Yes timing belt does not interface with water pump.

The accessory belt turns the wp pulley which is connected to a viscous clutch on which the fan is mounted.

Had not thought about fan balance. Will keep that in mind as I get it all back together next weekend.

Suspect this could have been pretty ugly had it all come apart on the highway the other night on the way home. I can't even tell what the belt is riding on on the bottom of the crank pulley.

Changed the HB. Put it all back together and everything seems ok. No weird sounds from fan but will watch it closely. Damn HBs are quite expensive.

The only problem I had was the holes on the replacement hb did not line up with the Lexus tool used to keep crank from turning when tightening bolt. hopefully won't be an issue when I remove it sometime soon to replace the crankshaft oil seal which I think is leaking. Always something!!
