Awesome pics, Greg. Hard to tell from the pic (and I'm no expert), but it looks like from helmet marking (square with a tick at 6 o'clock) he was in the 426th Airborne Quartermaster company attached to the 101st Airborne Division.

All of the 101st regiments/companies had a symbol on their helmets that identified them. The main rifle regiments (327th, 501st, 502nd and 506th) had playing card symbols (clubs, diamonds, hearts, spades respectively). If you've ever watched Band of Brothers (which hopefully you have), that series centers around the Company E of the 506th, so all those guys are shown with spades on the side of their helmets. The support companies of the 101st got regular geometric symbols. This is a good chart:

Here's the famous pic of Eisenhower talking to members of the 502nd before the landings. Note the heart on the side of the helmet:

I have been waiting for my 13 year daughter to learn about WWII and WWI in school but it looks like it's up to me and my wife to do it. Our school system over here seems more interested in teaching about the Harlem Renaissance, and various other social Historical issues as oppose to teaching about the people who sacrificed all for this great country. Very frustrating.

Really? Here in the People's Republic of MD my 14 yr old is being taught a LOT of WWII history. Her and I watched Band of Brothers a couple weeks ago because she was interested after learning about Bastogne and the Battle of the Bulge.

Thanks guys, it's because of your dads, family members, and friends that I don't -have to- speak German....

I don't think we as Euros ever will forget D-Day. Such an unimaginable scope of operation, which cost in itself so many lives, yet was leading to the beginning of the end....

I will make sure that our daughter, half American/half Dutch, will understand the imporantance of the allied forcec during WWII.

My 8 year old son loves anything military, in particular WWII history. He'll watch the Military History channel all day if I'd let him. He reminded me today that it was June 6, D-Day anniversary.
