So, I have pulled the VW out of the corner to address a few things that I found.

The little channels around the trunk, which hold the seal in place were rusted.

I cut them out and cleaned up the section.

I punched the new ones and spot welded them in.

I also found a few little holes that need to fixed, like this one.

Also the edge from the hole was rusted.

So I cut it out around the hole, and welded in a small half moon piece

Found another hole from an AC install. Looks like some metal eating animal was eating on it.

New patch to be welded in.

Put some self etching primer on the blank metal.

These small things tame a lot of time.

Cheers
Engelbert

Great work as always. Stuff like this is why I start looking at old Beetles and just get really, really nervous.

The dealer installed AC systems were the starting point of a lot of rust. Hacked hose and wire holes with no rust treatment and lots of screws through the sheet metal.

Here is a little update on the Cabrio:

I painted the body around the section where it meets the body, and started to put the body and chassis together.

I test fitted the fenders and check if I can fit 7" wheels.

They will not work with the stock fenders.

Here with a 6" wheel.

This will be the wheel I going to use for the car.

All the fenders are on, I need to make some modifications for the bumper brackets, since I will not use the shocks.

The left headlight bucket has some rust, and I need to cut out a piece and weld in a little patch.

Cheers
Engelbert

Just saw this update. Wow, this is coming along nicely. Such an insane amount of work to save these cars.

Looking at the car on the lift without the door made me laugh. Has to be an insane amount of chassis flex on these cars.

More work on the Cabrio.

Started to weld in some filler for the smaller bumper brackets, and found a layer of body filler.

So I removed the excess body filler and flatten out the sheet metal a bit. So I will use a bit less filler.

Next, making some filler pieces.

Weld them in

One side done.

Test fitting the bracket

I will have bumper with the turning signal, so I need to close these holes.

The fenders will look much cleaner this way.

Next is to fix the headlight buckets, and move to the rear bumpers.

Cheers
Engelbert
