Well, the steel I got there was my ballast - not exactly structural. But Charlie told me about AIW, and that's where he gets his for ballast.

I got steel tube for my tire rack from these guys several years ago and would recommend them. They were much cheaper than Dixie for what I needed. I have used Dixie for a small alum angle job and was happy.

As noted Potomac has good prices overall for a local stock but Dixie can do cut to size and weld work if needed. Dixie is OK for a small chunk of something. For raw stock I think of Dixie as the 7/11 of metal. keep in mind too that they are a sheet metal shop and don't stock anything over 1/4 inch or much in the way of tube stock.

You can get full stick steel home on a regular PU truck. I hang it on the pass side of the truck using three 10K type straps. One up and over the hood and one at the front and rear of the bed, padding everything with layers of cardboard with some cloth between the cardboard and paint.

This is great guys -- thanks! Gives me hope; I am regularly frustrated by the seeming lack of a decent hardware store near me so having so many steel shops makes me feel a bit better.

We buy lots of steel from Durrett Sheppard. We have purchased square tube, metal rods, corrugated sheet, diamond plate, and of course bar stock. Of course we use the location in Baltimore close to Bayview.
