Default 997.1 Engine Fail at 70k

This may (or may not) be the end of my 2007 997 C4S at 70k miles. Still waiting to hear from dealer. Engine rattle around 2k+ RPM, then complete engine stop and failure to crank at all with the starter.

A few days before failure, was driving up the GW Parkway very close to the redline (just before the limiter bounces you off) for a few minutes, listening to the exhaust (AWE cats). Oil/engine temps on dash were rising a little, but not significantly. In the middle of this redline experiment, got flashing engine light and engine turned itself off, conveniently right as I was coming to an exit (Turkey Run). Turned off car, let it sit for a few minutes, and restarted with no warnings. (Super nice Parkway officer stopped by to check on why my flashers were on) Bluetooth OBD reader showed a misfire on 2/4 and multiple/random misfire. Cleared codes, and no more were generated.

Had the car out a few times within the next few days with no problem.

Was driving moderately around town a few days later and rattling started from the backend. I've been hunting all kinds of rattles from the backend (ever since a deer strike that required a new roof (yes)), and had just (as in days before) re-installed the entire back interior of the car, so it took a minute to sort out that it was RPM related (starting at about 2k RPM). Knowing there is no IMS problem on a 2007 997.1, figured I'd limp back to the dealer a few miles away. Within a minute or so more of not doing much driving and still rattling, the engine stopped and wouldn't turn over. Checked codes on the OBD reader - none.

Never money shifted the car. I've come close a few times (going into the wrong gear), but am so slow on the clutch that I was always able to catch it in time.

Had it flatbedded to dealer and waiting to hear.

No IMS issues on a 997, that'd be news to me. I always heard they had the same issue...since it still has an IMS. Beefed up design, but sometimes S happens.

Redline on GW parkway, you must have been in what, 1st or 2nd gear

My nephew has a 05' 997 and had ims failure. Cost 18K to replace. His car was around 70k miles too.

Hmmm....I'm not a big fan of riding at just below rev limiter for several minutes.

Sad that the motor is toast, but not sure you've got your facts right. As others have mentioned, the IMS was an issue up until the 2009 motor redesign, as I per my understanding.

A friend in Virginia Beach just had an engine failure in his 997.1 two weekends ago at Summit Point during the Riesentoter region DE. He took it to Checkered Flag Porsche in Va Beach and they told him it was a D Chunk failure of a cylinder wall. Now he is looking at all options but was leaning towards picking up a 997.2.

He said he never even heard any abnormal sounds but it just shut down and lights all lit. He said he was between T9- and pit in and was able to coast it in to the pit lane ok. He had oil and coolant all over in the engine compartment.

I'm pretty sure a 2007 997 has the H6 (M97?) engine in it. Could be oil starvation. When I had it there was a rattling/ticking noise from the engine and the check engine light was on. Scored cylinder(s) or D-chunking might also be a culprit. IMS isn't out of the question but rare on the later 997.1's. Hopfully it is something simple like a crankshaft plug. That would cause a noticeable ticking sound and loss of engine oil.

That's your problem right there -- these high-performance engines like to be at or beyond redline, not "very close" to it. You were lugging the engine, a big no-no.
