My money is on the amp. Have you noticed it dropping out to particular music (thinking speaker load)? Room temperature? Power grid? I looked up your amp (nice amp, good pick) and see it doubles at 4 ohms so dropping impedance shouldn’t be a problem, but the 2 massive torroidal power supplies may be strangling your power grid - no power conditioner for the amp, correct?
Hi Jay - the dropouts (confirmed again last night after shuffling interconnects) are mainly during relatively quiet parts - e.g., dialogue during movies, etc. With action scenes or playing music (i.e. under higher load), not as much.

BT - I also swapped to the Active outputs on the pre-amp - no change in behavior.

FWIW, I do have a power conditioner (API Power Wedge - another 20 YO vintage).

I will sound like a broken record - check out Brett's used / vintage gear at Hifi Heaven and Command Performance AV both located in Falls Church.

Thanks to Jay for the loan of a couple pieces of equipment. It's the power amplifier.

Off to shop for some new kit.

Ended picking up a PS Audio Stellar S300 power amp. This is a hybrid - class D with a MOSFET class A input stage, built on a pair of ICEpower modules which can drive 300 WPC into 4 ohms.

The low pass filter for the class D section rolls off at 50kHz.

VERY impressed so far - very listenable right out of the box with great detail and sound staging.

Unless something goes drastically wrong I’m probably hanging on to it.

That $tuff is pricey! Pretty nice gear, though.

Next project is to build an updated version of the chip amps mentioned here. New version uses dual EC7293's producing 60wpc/8ohms or 120wpc/4ohm.

Will probably be getting rid of the 50wpc PP monoblocs I built a couple years ago if anyone is interested.

The chip amps look like a very interesting rabbit hole to go down... https://spectrum.ieee.org/consumer-e...-sort-of-cheap

After doing some research I bought a 3e TPA3251-based amplifier board. 100+wpc at tiny distortion and reviews said the sound was good, so our trade deficit is down another 70 clams to China.

The IEEE article called for a linear power supply, but most folks who build find that a switching power supply works well, so picked up a Meanwell 24vdc switcher. Everything came in this week and I couldn't resist cobbling it together to listen.

Net result: damn fine sound, accurate and fast. The little (4"x4") board didn't break a sweat at enthusiastic levels through Kef104/2 speakers which can be a challenge to drive.

Extra damn fine for $100 in parts - the case and face plate will cost more. Watch for a pair of Bryston 2b-lp pro amplifiers in the for sale forum soon...

The photos on the IEEE site (which I've kept open planning to do what you did) don't show a heat sink. Did you buy that separately or did it come with the board? Was the switching power supply a money issue or a quality one (the toroid transformer looks cooler, but probably makes the amp much heavier)?
