Default Shen schedule

I just took a look at the Shen schedule, and I was surprised to see Blue had been moved between White and Black/Red. Thinking about the logistics, I'm wondering how Black/Red instructors are going to get more than 5 minutes of quality track time per session.

Assuming I have a Blue student, and also assuming I spend 5-10 minutes talking to them after each session. Afterward, I need to make my way to my car, get ready, and head out. Let's say another 5 minutes because various things happen. I then need to spend 5-10 minutes short shifting and taking it easy to get the oil up to temp in my car. So now we are 15-20 minutes into a 25 min session. By the time I am ready to do anything, I will be seeing the 5 min board if I haven't already.

Am I missing something? I really like Shen, and this will probably be the only time I take the 964 on track this year, so I'd hate to not be able to have fun with it.

I'm guessing since a lot of instructors will have 2 students they wanted to make it so you don't jump out of one car and right into another, with no time to debrief the first student, and no time to prep the second.

I'll admit I do not understand the need for 5-10 minutes to short shift the car and get the engine up to temp.

Most instructors will have their car all ready to go during the White session, so when they come in from Blue all they need to do is hop in and fasten harnesses. They will already have helmet on, and in some cases HANs. Jump in an go stage. If oil temps are that much of a concern (low temps are usually not the oil temp issue when it is 90 deg out), start the car before Blue goes out and let it idle during the Blue session. But in my opinion that is not even remotely needed.

Thanks, I forgot about the double duty this weekend.

I'm not sure (as in I don't know) about leaving an air cooled car idling for 30-40 minutes. I got stuck on 66 for half an hour recently in mostly stop, little go traffic. The car was not happy for some time after that. I can try warming it up during white though.

I don't rev any of my cars above 3.5k until the oil is hot. Maybe that's overkill, but it makes me feel better. Last year, that took about 3 laps on Main in the 964 when I went out in a dead cold car, but it was cooler then it will be this weekend.

Thanks for the tips. That's what I was hoping for.

You should be able to get the oil up to temp within the first two laps. You'll be fine. That includes starting the car while you get sorted, sitting on grid for several minutes, then the out lap(s).

Given the schedule, maybe debrief very quickly and then follow-up when off track? Blue drivers can handle that -- just explain the situation.

Engine will warm up faster than the tires.
Just go.
