^ had a big one trying to ravage my sister's trash can last Thursday! Scared the living byjesusss out of me when I first saw just his "hands" as he climbed out of the can. Looked to be about 30+ lbs! Saw him or his cousin in the street this morning... from what I could see he ate a hardy last meal

That's amazing. JG is one of the handful of NASCAR drivers who can actually drive a car.

Keep telling yourself that. Despite NASCAR possibly not being your flavor of motorsport (its not mine) the drivers are world class. Look at Montoya. He did not go into NASCAR and mop up the floor with the rest of the field.

^ X22, funny too that when NASCRAP drovers jump ship for road racing they do very well too! Can't push the massive 2 ton NASCAR whips around the banked tracks near 200 mph without mad skills...

Oho come now, just simmah down nah. We rag on professional athletes all the time: "so-and-so wide receiver is terrible" or "that guy can't rebound to save his life". Does it mean that we think we could do the job better? Unlikely. I fully well know my driving couldn't hold a candle to any of these guys...but then again I'm not doing it for my job, raking in millions of dollars a year, now am I?
That said, it is legitimately difficult to pilot a 2-ton, minimal DF car at 200mph making only left-hand turns for five hours. To that I have no argument. The top drivers in NASCAR are about as talented as they come. Circle track driving is a whole 'nuther kind of skill, one that tends to favorite consistency and mental focus above most other traits. It's the fact that they can bump draft for hours that impresses me most. But don't get me started on JPM though. He may not be fantastic in NASCAR, but he is running at the top. Besides, some might not have considered him to be top-shelf in F1, either...same goes for Nelson Piquet Jr. Hell, in his entire time in F1, JPM only won seven times. And it's not like he had crap cars/teams -- he drove for Williams and McLaren. All I can remember from JPM is his phenomenal ability to whine. About everything.

And THATS what it boils down to. Nascar drivers are good at circle track. Its what they get paid to do. A small minority of them are as good at road racing. Just as JPM who was good at road racing wasn't immediately great at circle track. Different skill. No one would expect a top football athlete to be geat at basketball. Now, some of them could change disciplines given time and training but not all. To be great at that level of any sport you have to have SOME innate talent. The question is how much of it crosses over to OTHER sports.

This may be bass-ackward logic, but you can assess the relative quality of drivers by looking at the process by which those drivers get to where they are. By that analysis, F1 would appear to be the best. There are "bought" seats in F1, but for the legit teams, there is a very long and rigorous process usually starting with karts. For every paid driver in F1 there are probably a few thousand who tried to get there and failed. NASCAR drivers (those that are paid) do not have to overcome as many hurdles. For many, you just need your Daddy's last name.
Their skill set is undeniable, but it's also limited. In the middling racing world (eg Rolex GT or Grand Am) I think most people on this forum could become competitive given enough track time. It's a skill, but learnable. To be a regular podium finisher you need the time and talent. Quote:
