Charlie,
That's really very nice. Exceptionally so in fact. It's amazing how much good components make a difference in sound. Do keep me informed b/c I am seriously thinking of making one myself. Although, if it is anything like my previous home projects, it will be functional, but not quite as pretty. The cabinet my stereo lives in now is proof of that.

Charlie,
Take a look at this - http://www.enjoythemusic.com/channel/ch300b/ The guy is an avid TrackVision fiend [with a very nice 80s Ferrari]. Maybe can introduce you if you'd like. Those GZ34s are some honkin big diodes! Definite old school. Very nice work on the chassis, man. T

Absolutely beautiful Charlie - the final layout is definitely the one. I can't wait to hear that thing sometime. I have another project you may be interested in. Sent you a PM.

Damn -- I love B&Ws. Came very close to picking up a pair a few years back, but could not afford a model big enough for the large room I had in my condo. Now I have a pair of big floorstanders in a much smaller room in my house; been thinking it would be nice to 'downsize' while stepping up the quality.

Wow, I didn't realize the broad talent of Dorki's. Charlie, that's beautiful. I, too, have B&W 805s, but I have a friend with 801's which is what you should use to test this. I've heard 2 truly wonderful systems in my life. Both involved a great deal or work to the room acoustics. The first system was was a radiologist in Philadelphia (now in DC) with a Linn-Sondeck turntable, Grace tonearm, rebuild Dynaco tube preamp, and 2 Luxman mono tube power amps. He had 2 small British speakers (don't know the brand) and put on a relatively new record of a live jazz performance recorded in a small club. It sounded very good. He then put on an older release of the same record (the newer one was re-mixed). First we heard scratches. Lots of scratches. Then the music started, and despite the relatively poor condition of the record, we were instantly transported into the club. The instruments were placed around the room, and you could almost hear the performers perspire. It as magical. When I next heard the system 4 years later, the magic was gone, and he said it was mostly due to the replacement output tubes, which weren't as good as the original Luxman tubes.
The second system is the one with the B&W 801s. The owner is Lewis Lipnick, Principal Contrabasoonist with the NSO. He is also Principal of Lipnick Design (formerly "Your Silent Partner"), www.lipnickdesign.com. Check out the home theater in Scottsdale. Lew did the sound (he brought in his friends from Skywalker Ranch to help), and this may be the most impressive home theater ever constructed. Anyway, Lew writes for several stereophile and home theater magazines, and has some very fancy audiophile equipment (I've never heard of any of the brands), but it is very clean even at very high volumes. It's almost the opposite of the tube system. Anyway, Lew might be interested in your home-grown amp, Charlie, and I can make the introduction if you'd like. He lives in downtown DC, and is a really great guy (esp. considering he doesn't drive a Porsche, not even a FEWC).

I read that article and would be neat to meet your friend/fiend....especially if he has any loaner 300B 's for taste-testing. The sound of a tube is all subjective and highly depends on the circuit, speakers, etc.
