well I'm pretty sure it's still possible to die doing it. I think an Indy car driver helped prove that last week.

But in Hemingway's day, few racers lived through their careers. Now it's big news (still horrible news).

Perhaps the main point here is that in Hemmingway's day you had to be prepared to take great risk to do many things. Money or position was no help when driving a race car [or climbing Everest, or....]

Today, any schmuck can buy their way into almost anything. Pay $40K and an experienced guide and sherpas will drag your sorry arse as far up Everest as you can go before your body gives up or you summit. People have died on the mountain because of the human traffic jams caused by slow and unprepared 'climbers' at the choke points above C5. Pay even more and you can be a race driver. Hemmingway would not have wanted to live in this time.
