I have given you my best advice depending on which emblem you want on your race car. Don't get sucked into E hype. E probably only has 3-5 years before it goes the way of other letter classes. Besides, any air cooled costs $$$ to run.

Racing is fun, and for sure a step up from de, but...
Here is a different viewpoint from what others have said. If you aren't "type A" personality and hyper competitive, DE is a much better bang for your buck and time. You may find that depending on who you race with, you get WAY LESS track time for double or even triple the expense. An example of this would be a race I did with SCCA. IIRC there were no laps on Friday, a short 25 min practice session on Sat followed way later in the day by a short 20 mins or so qualifier. Sunday short practice session in the morning, like 830am, then an actual 25 minute race around 4pm
So, in total about 1or less days of DE time spread out over 2 days and no instructor pricing. Unless your car is prepped to the max and running in the highest group in your race, your still getting passed because of multi class racing and dealing with traffic messing up your race.
Try to buy a seat on a Lemons or Champ team, do a race with them for a lot of track time, then see if you want to proceed.
And yes, my dumb@ss is about to purchase another racecar, but plan to DE and race if I can afford it. You know... teacher money.

pfffft. Just do like Clark, and bring 3 different race cars that all run in different classes to each race weekend (plus spare/ back-up cars for each). You will get plenty of track time.
