Default I bought a new commuter...

Well, it seems like forever since I have posted here. I've been kinda busy with my new commuter.

You guys might remember me asking about BMW bikes here:
http://dorkiphus.net/porsche/showthread.php?t=32908

After much discussion, looking, riding, and testing I finally ended up with my new commuter. It is an 07 Kawasaki 650R. It had 850 miles on it when I got it, it is almost at 1200 already. Here is a pic of when I brought it home. Since then I have cleaned it (guy lived on a gravel road and it was dirty), cleaned and lubed the chain, changed the oil, checked the brake pads and fluid, and de-badged the Ninja part of it to try and reduce any racing or auto driver issues. (Apparently some people just hate sport bikes). I'm currently in the process of making the brackets to add the topcase. I'll post some new pics when I get the case mounted.

As far as gear, this is what I have (if there are any recommendations I will gladly take that into account):
-Helmet- Full face Bell Vortex (DOT and Snell 2010 approved)
-Jacket- Tourmaster Flex
-Pants- Icon Brawnson overpants
-Gloves- AGV waterproof and thinsulate
- Hatch kevlar lined
-Boots- Danner Acadia (next on my list to replace)

And another pic of when the garage mates got to meet...

Nice! I see its got riser bars already. My Monster came w/ some riser spacers from the PO (who was close to 70?) and I figured I'd take them off when I got it home but never have. They are kinda nice

That is funny my K12 came with risers as well and I left them on the bike, kind of like them now.

Thanks guys. What do you mean by risers? The bars? Because this is a 650r which had curved bars for a more upright riding position. I'd like to think of it as a the middle child between the Ninja 636 and the Versys riding positions.

I actually did my first commute in to work today. One word, FOG! Holy shnikes. I had to stop three times to clear my visor because I couldn't see. My gloves were soaked too, I think from having to wipe the fog off all the way in. It was crazy.

I really wanted a BMW but by the time you add in all the gear, taxes, insurance, and the bike itself it just didn't fit in my budget. The 650r was just about the only FI bike in my price range. Well unless I wanted a GSXR, which I did not. And I really wanted FI since I plan on using it as my commuter during the winter and I wanted those easy startups. Outside temp this morning was high 40s/low 50s and it started first push and was ready to roll.

racer-I do gear up on all rides. I also assume every car I see is going to turn in front of me, turn into me, not going to see me, or be actively trying to run me over...

Yes the rise in the bars. Didn't know ones that upswept were stock for that model. My duc has little blocks that go under the bars to raise them like below. Reuse the top caps plus longer bolts.

For rain/fog use dishsoap on your visor. Google it. The other soln is just go faster but thats not as advisable in the fog

FI rocks. Push the button and it "just starts". Carbs suck (pun intended).

Got my topcase on. I ghetto fabbed the brackets and need to pull it all back off and paint them. Works great, weight is over the backseat and not hanging off the back like the factory mounts, and it all tucks up behind my big booty so no extra drag.

I'll see if I an get a pic of the back as well, I added a bunch of reflective tape to the case because what it came with SUCKED.
