Default Auto By Design in Chantilly…your take?

Anyone know about them? They seem to have some nice cars and the prices aren’t bad by current standards for the most part.

Not looking to buy or sell, just curious.

My wife and I visited them when looking for her Porsche. In summary...we would only go there again if they had something unique that we really wanted, and we would treat it like a VERY shady used car sales lot from the 80's.

They do focus on buying more expensive cars from auction, so they had some interesting things like an Arnage, but that's where the good ends. They know very little about the cars, and are very dishonest. Our favorite comment from the sales person (among many inane statements) after finding that all 5 of their 996's wouldn't start: "Sports car batteries never last more than a day or two before going flat, you have to jump them".

If you were to buy something from them, I would recommend doing a thorough inspection, either yourself if you're capable or by a trusted third party. Treat it like a dog you found by the side of the road. It might turn out to be a real gem, or it might turn your life upside down. But, the shady guy standing next to the dog has only a passing familiarity with it and a deep desire for your money.

For perspective, we showed up in our Benz, dressed nicely, and were cash buyers. We got all the attention we could want from the sales staff and then some. They were "nice", but would say anything to make the sale.

We ended up buying a 997 from Tysons Porsche on that same day.

Friend recently bought an early CaymanS from ABD. Car and price seemed OK.

Few weeks after purchase, lost drive while on I495. Had car towed to Chapman, who found the driveshaft bolts had backed out, and other loose fasteners from a clutch change while the car was at ABD. So, be wary of any recent work done on their P-cars. A PPI is highly recommended.

^ a somewhat common problem so good warning for everyone. Since the axle bolts changed size and torque spec after the Gen I Boxsters I've seen many back out because the older, lower torque spec was used.
