I have a big metric set of SK long pattern wrenches I really like. My 'go to' set. But SK went under a few years ago and was bought by Irwin(?). Don't know if they are still good or not. I have bought a set of imperial sized Gearwrench long pattern since I don't work on non-metric stuff much (mostly old machine tools.) Was 1/3 the price of the SK and I'll be honest, looks like almost an exact copy and are just as nice. I'd buy again in a heartbeat.

I think SK became Gearwrench. Some of the parts share parts numbers, iirc

Tooltopia often has good sales on Gearwrench sets.

ha, thats the thing. 1 wrench, maybe 2 or the set. $30 becomes $200 real quick.

At the risk of sounding ignorant: what is a long pattern wrench, and how does it differ from a regular combination wrench?

It's just a longer wrench that provides better access to hard to reach fasteners. I think it has to be ~10% to 15% longer than the manufacturers usual offerings.
