For single-ended tube stuff and compatible speakers, check out Deja Vu Audio in McLean. The owner (Vu) is pretty cool -- he let me bring home several amps, cables, etc. for in-home auditions a few years ago. Those guys live and breathe single-ended triode amps. http://www.dejavuaudio.com
I think Vu has owned 911s before (had a Ferrari in the parking garage last time I was there). Years ago, he offered to trade me audio equipment for my Targa. I'm more of a 200 wpc type of guy, so I have not bought much from him, but I did pick up a nearly new Audionote CD player from them this past summer. As usual, I was allowed to take it home and try it out before purchasing. You can get some good deals buying used equipment from them.

thanks for the tip on cantons mike. so far only klipsh fit my budget AND hit 96dB
mat, crossoverless is the only way to do the stats at this level. probably never find "that deal" though dave, thanks for the store info. i'll definitely go and play w/ what they've got. this is supposed to be my 'bedroom' system so i'm trying to go as minimalist and pure as i can afford.... right. |

Charlie... is that one you made? That is very nice looking. I have always been curious about making my own amp for a bedroom system, but never went past that.
You know, this discussion and the one on pelican have been great as I am actually usuing my system a lot more... other than just for home theatre.

Mike,
No, I didnt build that. Wish I could take credit for it though. Was just showing an example of what architecture I'm trying to emulate and what can be done at the DIY level.

This stuff is gorgeous! Another project I'd love to take on. Might even remember some of the tricks of building hardware from the old hollow state days, which were kinda before my time. Still, massive power amps were still tubes for a while before reliable power transistors became available.
What kind of preamps are you guys using in front of these??

Tony: From what I've seen/read, if you build/buy an integrated amp, a pre-amp very well may not be necessary unless your phono output is VERY small. CD, DAC, tape, wheel-wheel components usually put out enough voltage not requiring a pre-amp (with an integrated amp).

Tony -- I have an old Audible Illusions preamp (6588 tubes). It's probably the weak point of my system these days. Since moving into my house 8 years ago, I haven't had a good room for audio (and it's no fun sitting down in the basement just to listen to music, so the system is set up in the rec room, competing w/ furniture, tv, etc.) so I stopped spending the $$. The CD player was the first thing I have upgraded in over 8 years.
