My first guess would have been a busted pump, but when I disconnected one of the cooler lines fluid does pump out. What gives? How is it possible for the diptstick to have clean fluid on it but the rest of the system have some really dirty stuff?

The car is a 1998 Volvo S90 with an Aisin AW30-40LE (seen in some Toyota trucks and a few Lexuses). I'm draining, replacing filter, and flushing the fluid because it started to throw selector switch and lock up solenoid codes.

Sample size and presentation format. Looking through 1/32 of an inch of fluid on a metal stick is not same as looking at a drain pan full.
