Default Boxster 987 pops out of 2nd gear

Hi all,
Been having minor shifting issues with the 6spd manual shifting into 2nd. After you hear the "Pop" the tranmission won't stay in 2nd gear. In the video I'm trying to downshift into 2nd into T-5. I eventually find 3rd and head into the pits.

You can shift into any gear without issue and it runs fine. But it won't stay in 2nd. Anyone have an idea on what just broke?

when was the fluid last changed? Check the mounts...bad mount can sometimes cause it to pop out of gear...and ensure the linkage is good and not damaged (i don't know what they look like in a boxter)...as it is only one gear may be a bad synchro inside the transmission...

Mark,
Do you have OE shift cables or do you have Numeric?

Prior to starting the season (April) fluid was changed. Shifter and cables are both Numeric and can't be more than 2 seasons old. I had the car on the lift prior to this past weekend's DE at SP. I checked linkages and cables, nothing appeared wrong with them. I did not take a good look at the mounts. I'll do that tonight.

The trans internally is essentially untouched except for seasonal fluid changes. Its seen quite a bit of abuse over the last 5 years of DEs and one Club Race this past June. At the Club Race I missed a a shift into 2nd into Oak Tree and a couple into 5th on some straights. Those kinds of missed shifts have never really happened since I got the Numeric setup. The mounts are worth checking. But after hearing that pop/thud going into T-5 at SP, I really think its an internal problem.

The Numeric cables are adjustable at the transmission end and while having the cable too short/long would tend to impact 2-4-6 as a set you are generating much more torque in 2nd. The cables are fine and pretty much bullet-proof - I was considering the adjustment may be just a skosh off. Worth looking at as popping out of gear is often symptomatic of a mis-adjusted cable (and cheaper to fix than an internal transmission issue.

I was thinking the same thing. I suspect the right side cable (or both cables) need to be lengthened a bit on the transmission end.

BTW here's a great post that gives an overview of the 987 shift cables:

https://dorkiphus.net/porsche/showpo...23&postcount=1

One more thing: if adjusting the Numeric cables doesn't fix the problem then I'd spend some time looking at the other external linkages on the trans. I'm starting to think that wear/slop in the bellcrank and linkage across the top of the trans are starting to cause shifting problems for 987 folks.

Lastly: make sure your engine and trans mounts are in good shape and consider going to poly mounts if you haven't already.

Thanks all for the good suggestions. I got the car on the lift last night and checked cables, linkages, and mounts. All looked OK. It appears to shift firmly into 2nd both using the shifter and manually at the transmission. While I'd like to think its cable adjustment, I forgot to mention the whhrring, whizzing, and grinding that began occuring after the pop/thud in the video. If you listen towards the end of the video you can just hear a whirring coming from the trans as i'm trying to get it in gear. Also, the pop didn't just feel like it slipped out of gear, it felt like it actually slowed me down for an instant. I had read a couple of posts online about previous gen Boxsters having a similar popping out of 2nd problem. That was apparently an internal problem. Can anyone recommend a G87.21 trans rebuilder?
