BillC has one HoF thread
Default Recommend a trans rebuild shop?

Well, it looks like the trans in the 2006 Durango needs to be rebuilt. Haven't had it "officially" diagnosed, but it's whining pretty bad but not slipping yet. I stopped at the dealer this afternoon to get a quote, and they want $5500 to install a reman trans (but it has a 3-yr warranty!).

Since that's more than the truck is worth, I am going to investigate other options. Do any of y'all have any recommendations for a rebuild shop that can handle this? Preferably something near me (northern Silver Spring, MD). Unfortunately for me, this is the only vehicle we currently own that I can drive, at least until my foot heals up, so I can't just drive something else until I get around to fixing the beast.

Thanks!

Warranty is nice but thats standard fair for a reman. Sorry, I dont have a shop for you but if you look around you'll see the trans is ~1500 + core.

Id look at getting a jasper recon trans. They will want a core. New rebuilt units and just install it yourself or hire a local shop to install. I can give you a shop in SoMd that has done a fair amount of work for me and a Jasper rep.

Another option if Jasper is to much is to go to Brandywine Salvage and get a good used one.

Talk to Fahdi at Aamco over on Tyco road, he works with Intersport some and has done a trans on our old ml350 and a friend's excursion

I second the Jasper. When the trans crapped out in my old 99 Durango, the dealer down here wanted $4900 (2006 dollars) to install a remanded which still had the same crappy torque converter which is what went bad so I would have been in the same boat.

Got a Jasper transmission for for $3200 installed. Better warranty with better internals. That was the recommendation I was given and went with it.

My experience is that most dealers vend transmission work out to shops like AAMCO and other specialty transmission shops vs having someone on site do the work. Reman might be quicker than waiting for yours to be rebuilt. Monies might be similar as well. Sorry no referrals.

Hi Bill, I've had great experience with Calvin's Transmissions in Sykesville. Had My pickup, Denali, and a car or two in to have their trans rebuilt. Very reasonable compared to what a dealer wants.

I've used FlowerHill Automotive in G'burg MD, 301-869-8900. They used a company called RMP (now Holman; http://www.holmanparts.com/) to get a beefed up rebuilt tranny that's still in my 2001 Suburban (FIL now owns). For towing purposes, the beefed up rebuild worked very well. However, looks like Holman focuses on Ford & GM, so not sure about Dodge. Ask for Manley, tell him I said hi.

Lee-high transmissions if still in business in Merrifield. Low cost and high quality job Also do a great job installing quaife diffs on non p-cars.

I used Lee's Transmission in Silver Spring for some repairs on a Toyota transmission and had a good experience.
