When I was in school I worked for the town plumber. My foreman was blind in one eye due to a flying soil pipe chip that happened when he was using a chisel to make a cut. (What the heck is soil pipe? Ask your grandfather.)

Well fuch, both of my grandfathers are dead.

I guess I will go to my grave not knowing what this is, other than a sanitary sewer pipe carrying what did not wind up in someone's pants when they 'soiled themselves'.

No shit?

I nag my crew and my son about eye and ear protection. I suffer from 24/7 tinnitus and have picked all kinds of junk out of my eyes. If it is loud it is damaging your ears and the damage is both unseen and permanent.

Eye protection goes beyond when you are using spinning power tools

I'm not a grandfather yet but being the son of a plumber (certainly does not qualify me as an expert) as a kid I helped him run soil pipes (named so because they had "soiled water" running through them.)These were sections commonly made from terra cotta or cast iron with a male and female end. To cut them we used a ratcheting cutting chain that has several cutting wheels embedded in the chain that would score the pipe. Once scored a chisel and hammer was used to finish the cut. Putting the sections together required stuffing a waxy based rope called oakum in the gap between the male and female end of the pipe and then pouring molten lead on top of it to seal it permanently. When PVC and glue came along I was out of the cushy job and was relegated to just the ditch/shovel work.

Oakum is still around and sees a lot of use. Lead less so.

Had something similar happen back in junior high when a small metal chip flew up off a piece I was drilling and put a nice big star in the safety glasses I was wearing.

What stays with me to this day is how quickly it all happened. My brain only figured out what happened long after the piece struck my glasses.

I'll also recommend use of some type of eye protection (glasses, face shield down, etc.) when driving on track. I've had track detritus bounce off the outside mirror and plink off my visor or sunglasses...
