Some of the new circuits in TDs car. Comments welcome. Wise-ass and pointless remarks, not so much .
Here is the cooling fan circuit. The idea here is that a 3 pos switch controls 1 of 3 modes for the fans - always on, always off, and automatic (on with the temp switch in the radiator). The always off can be dangerous if you're not paying attention, so I designed in a warning light for the dash that comes on when fans are in "off" mode. The "fan off" idea is one of my favorites - I love the fact that 944 drivers have to think of these things to wring every.last.HP. out of these cars Next is the lighting. Very simple design. Two circuits, one to each side of the car, each fused at 25A and controlled with a 30A relay. 12ga wire run to the light connectors. The connectors in the engine compartment are environmentally sealed and have covers that protect the contacts when not connected to the removable lights. A simple toggle switch controls the relays for the lights and the dash lighting, too. Dash lights are on thier own fuse after the switch so an overload in the dash lighting doesn't take out the relays. I figure each side is good for up to 250W of lights.

How about wire the "always off" warning light to be lit by the thermoswitch so it will light (and could also sound) when the car needs cooling. I might not have a all fans off position. In the pits you can kill the fans via the main or ignition kill if needed. Driving a red mist and cooking the motors cooling system sucks and I have seen it happen.
The aftermarket back up lights with alarm are handy. They are a replacement back up bulb with a beep- beep -beep built in. stuff one in a trailer light and you have a visible and audible warning. I have a red one for oil and a yellow one for (edit) Gen. Lights (and gauges) only work if you look at them.

Along the lines of Kurt's idea ...
The temp thermoswitch [off radiator] that kicks in the fans at coolant is X degrees should also be wired to an electric prod ... right next to the hole for the sub strap. I believe, appropriately enough, that Hot-shot is the brand of choice Surely wouldn't miss that guage then. |

Good suggestions, I esp like the temp warning light. Kurt - your alt light - is that part of the D+ circuit for the alternator like it is on later 911s and 944s?
FWIW, we're putting that Dash2 in the car, and TD tells me its fully programmable to set off warning lights for water temp, oil pressure, etc. I still have to put an alternator light in the dash (D+ circuit) and want to put an oil pressure light, too, that's separate from the Dash2. I'll let the 944 guys debate the merits of the fan disable switch. There is the claim that its good for a HP or so, which I guess is good in a race when you only have 147 to begin with. another idea would be to remove the "fan on" circuit, such that the driver has the choice to either run the fans on auto or disable them completely. The more I think about it - when would you ever run the fans if the temps weren't high enough to trip the temp switch? In this new design, I use one of these: on the switch. To disable the fan, flip the guard up and then flip the switch up. I picture the result being like a Night Rider type turbo boost as the '44 gets hit with a surge of 1 extra HP. Good thing TD will be strapped in. Keep the good suggestions - regarding these or any other circuits - coming.

what alternator? The Real Porsches that Dr. P built have generators!
I ran a wire from each of the stock idiot lights to two very small 12 V relays that in turn power the lights.

Yeah, and 6V electrics, too!
