Suggestions for small milling machine
My lovely wife asked me what I wanted for Christmas. After the usual, just your love and devotion, she was looking for a real answer, so...
I wanted to learn more about machining. Rather than doing the conventional thing of taking a class, I was just going to buy a small milling machine and watch some youtube videos. Any suggestions of small mills? Mini-mills from Grizzly, Harbor Freight, ? Or something slightly larger such as Grizzly or Jet? What are the basic tools needed? Clamping blocks, dial gauges, assortment of drill bits and end mills? Budget is $2500 but I don't have to spend that much. Suggestions?

Keep in mind that the cost of the machine is but the start. All the fixtures and fitting tools can exceed the cost of the mill real fast.

An option is to start with the mpcnc. It's an assembly required simple three axis machine. Best used with softer materials but can do metal as well. It has an active community with lots of videos.
