Default Consignment dealer in the DC/Baltimore area?

A dear friend and a fellow BMWCCA instructor suddenly passed away and a couple of us are trying to help his widow with selling some of the cars. Of the 2 cars, a 996 GT3 is what we are focusing on. Another friend and I are converting the records into PDF format so they can be easily shared.

What I am looking for is recommendation from the community on how best to guide the family on selling the car. The family is in mourning and likely not going to be able to list the car themselves and devote energy dealing with inquiries. So my thought was to perhaps connect them with a consignment dealer in the area for valuation and help with selling the car. If you know anyone you can recommend, please let us know.

As soon as we have the record ready and have some photos available, we will share the details of the car on this forum as well.

Thanks.

Sloan?

That said, unless there is financial distress, it might be worth it to just step back and let time pass before pushing a sale. Maybe they will come to want the car as a way to remember the family member who passed away

I sold a 1984 944 on BAT for an estate where the owner had passed. Worked very well and got $24,500 for it but only 12K miles single owner etc. They paid all the service etc and I did charge a % , all were happy, Agree might want to wait a few months if possible.

^^^ BaT is a good place to sell. Also PCA Mart is excellent. Both require someone knowledgeable to facilitate the transaction. If you have the time and expertise that might be a nice thing to do to help your friends family.

Sorry for your loss.

x2, selling prices on BAT are just, well... great place to sell. I think you need to be engaged to sell there though, the peanut gallery can get fiesty if the seller isnt glued to the auction comments. Might be a little stressful but high selling prices are the norm, when the seller is engaged.

If they want the cars to sell the gt-3 with the least involvement and most speed sell it to a Porsche dealer. Price won’t be BAT grade nuts but the transaction will be nearly instant and without effort. At least get a price from them. This would be a way to get a baseline and a condition grade. Time and effort would be a drive to the store and a up of coffee while they pour over it. Use car wholesale prices are up right now. Take the baseline and condition grade tack on some % and post it here

X2 on posting it here first.

This is a client of mine; he's a good guy. A lot of his sales end up going through BAT.

John, I’m very sorry for the loss of your friend and to his family.

Being a service advisor at the same Mercedes Benz dealer here in Washington for the last 21 years I have many clients that I have built relationships with that have come to me with similar situations. It’s heart breaking to hear that someone that I have worked with so closely for so many years is no longer around and their spouse/kids/other relatives don’t know what to do with the deceased cars. Depending on the family situation, Kurt’s recommendation of taking the car to a Porsche dealer and having the appraisal performed will be the quickest way to allow the family to move on to the next car, next possession, next step in the process they are going through. I will tell you that negotiation will be little if any as you have to remember a PreOwned dept manager will be looking strictly at the numbers and will have little concern at that point how well the car was taken care of, what upgrades have been performed, etc... It’s only a numbers game and just another car as far as he’s concerned. The family would strictly be using that route as a matter of convenience. BaT is a good option if the family is wanting to get the true retail value for the car but, if you’ve never gone through the process I warn you it’s a huge amount of work to write the BaT listing and a lot of back and forth between the writers and the seller before the posting is actually listed. I sold a car on BaT, it took three weeks to get the listing posted, a week for the ad and then it was another two weeks to actually get the car sold because the winning bidder tried to renegotiate the terms after the sale was completed. BaT arbitrators stepped in and dealt with it but it was just an overall pain in the ass dealing with it. So much so that you’d wished that you just went the easy route.

You’ll get a lot of great suggestions here but the bottom line is you and this person’s family & his other friends have lost someone very dear to them and that’s way more important than messing around with some stupid car.
