Default Feeler looking for a G50

Before I go $6 million dollar man on mine, I wanted to see if anyone was squirreling away a 964 G50 with shorter gears and LSD they might want to sell or trade

Or a 993 G50 looking for a rebuild. 6 speeds might be better for what I want to do than 5.

Sorry that I have neither, but regearing a 6 speed G50 is major $. Then again, just a rebuild was serious $, so maybe it's just a matter of how much.

Yeah, I’m still in the feeling out phase. Trying to determine regearing mine versus buying someone else’s versus regearing a 993s.

A lot of people say it’s worth it on the street too, not only the track. But maybe it’s just too much to do in today’s market, like that engine rebuilding thread.

I need a Miata.

Check the German Ebay site. I found some killer deals on 993 ROW and RS goodies over the years. As for building vs buying. Buying used is always an unknown, if you're going to keep the car longterm, bite the bullet and re-gear. You won't be disappointed.

That said, I know of a Rothsport re-geared Riveria Blue track-based 993 for sale if interested.

I still kick myself for not bringing a G50/21 home from France when they were €2500.

FWIW, Copans rebuild on my 6 speed was ~$7500, with $1500 in labor and the rest bearings and 2 synchros. Judging from core charges being asked, buying a 6 speed transaxle could cost that much again, add $1500/gear to regear and if you want to change 1st or 2nd and it's a 96-98 gearbox, $2500 for a motorsports mainshaft.

I strongly suspect that a well-geared rebuild of your 5 speed will be 90% of the joy at < 1/2 the cost of converting to a regeared a 6 speed.

Thanks for the pointer. I’ll take a look.

Thanks a lot, this is very helpful. So, scratch the 993 box.

Friend of mine has two 993 G50 boxes I believe.
One is a G50/30 (cup) with low miles, the other is a freshened G50/20 w/shorter gearing. Either is available, both are spendy.
Thx

A 993 Cup box would be awesome, but I bet it would cost more than I paid for my E46 M3.

I'm afraid to ask, but can you send me info on them anyways?

Actually doing shorter gears may have dropped down the priority list. One of the reasons I was thinking of shorter gears was seeing how other 964s pulled hard on me out of corners. However, one of the things I've been dealing with is a knock sensor fault code and the resultant pulled timing that really affects power when you only have so much to start with. I had tried various remedies, but finally just replaced the knock sensors. That seems to have hopefully done the trick.

I went for a drive yesterday and I'd forgotten what this car feels like with full (chipped) power. It launches hard out of corners now, and is so much fun everywhere. So I may follow my original plan of doing minor weight reduction over the winter (RS carpets, radio delete, RS heater pipe) and then see how the car feels next year on track.

I'm sure. I paid a boatload for my G50/30 cup box, then opened it up to refresh the diff. Wasn't a cheap month, but boy oh boy made a world of difference. The steel synchros were a nice improvement too. Worth mentioning, the G50/30 can't be bought from Porsche anymore. They'll still service and do a refresh on a G50/30 stamped case with a warranty, but last time I priced that out it was 15K in 2013 dollars.
