Default WTB air cooled 911 track car

I love driving my 964 on track, but I hate beating it up. The amount of rubber I had to clean off after last weekend was impressive and aggravating with the marks it leaves in the paint. I’ve been all over the map the past couple weeks trying to figure out if there is anything else I’d rather drive, but there isn’t. Sure, there are more capable cars, but I don’t need that. I want a car that makes me smile as I walk up to it.

So I’m looking for an older 911 that has been track upgraded, including engine and trans. I’m mainly looking for 3.2s and up, with 3.6 being my main preference. Will consider something will a full cage.

Wide body is greatly preferred, unless it's a 993.

Budget is $50k. Been doing comps of actual sales this year, and that seems to be more than enough.

I sold my '86 race car to someone in exactly the same situation - except it has a stock 3.2 engine. No problems driving it in Red run group (although the few times I passed GT3s it made me wonder...). You don't need a 3.6, and if you ask people with the 3.6 conversions, at least one has had serious issues with cooling (and I believe it was more). A nice, light caged 3.2 with a good suspension is a blast, and very reliable.

Jazz has a 3.6 conversion which he tracked. You can ask him about any issues.

I wonder why retire a 964 which has been a track car, for a "lesser" franken built version. It is not like you are taking a pristine car off the track to preserve its value. But, we all justify our track addiction. That said, good luck.

Talk to Dan Jacobs. He told me about a 964 race car which has not been raced for a while.

Find an SC or a 3.2 Carrera which would also be vintage group eligible if you get the urge to go racing down the road.

I know of an SC that Billy Ring has sitting at his shop (Performance Auto Works out by Summit Point). It has been sitting a while but raced in PCA in G (now D class) so it will have a logbook and transponder. Car belongs to one of his customers. Needs clean up and safety gear updated, fluid changes, and tires. I'll email you as well.

I agree, I don't *need* a 3.6. But I like 3.6s. I meant to say I was looking for 3.2 and up, but preferred a 3.6. What I absolutely do not want is a torque-less screamer. I updated it.

Nader, I'm not trying to preserve the value; I'm trying to preserve the car. if something happened to it, it would be hard and expensive to replace it, especially with another '93. They say don't take a car to the track that you can't afford to lose. I do not want to lose this car. Yes, it's a track car in the same way my M3 was a track car, and this is in almost as good of shape, with nothing stripped and everything working. It's a perfect weekend driver.

I don't know if anyone remembers Marty's white '74 with a 3.6, but that's what I came close to buying. I've decided to pass, not due to the car because it's excellent, but I'm re-evaluating priorities. if anyone else is looking, he's decided it's finally time to let it go.

I have a similar car to the 74 you mention, but in a few pieces. So much fun. Worry more about trans temps than engine. Sure, you need to add cooling to both, but engine cooling is proven and not hard. Trans is a bit more complicated but not really that hard. I struggled a bunch at first with the car as it had more adjustability than I was used to. Again, nothing hard, just takes time to shake it out and learn it. Its hard to replicate threshold braking at VIR t1 in a parking lot for example. Plan on 'wasting' a few events figuring things out.

Did I mention these things are a hoot to pedal around a track? Good luck with the hunt, whatever you decide.
