I got in a NC a few weeks ago. I really wanted to like it, to the point of talking myself into it before I drove it. I just dont fit, fat guys need not apply. If my head was ~1" less egg shaped I might be in. I've had a few customer cars over the years, always loved driving them but always with the top down.

If the NC is out its nicest e46 or e90 you can find. Unless... Mustang. Bang/$$ is hard to top.

2nd gen SLK350 (W171) are big fun, not as punishing a ride as a Boxster S 50thAE, faster in a straight line but not quite as quick in the corners. I only got rid of my SLK because I was running SCCA and hoped the top Boxster at the time would have a better chance against the S2000s and Corvettes. The SLKs fit the stated budget and come with a 6spd.

Miata. Will rarely break and when it does parts are plentiful and cheap. There is a reason why it has multiple classes in SCCA.

I understand all the pull for the Miata.. I will just have to test drive one to make sure I and "the boy" can fit (he's about 6'1 and since I keep feeding him, he keeps growing )

Ted - thanks for the MB feedback. PCAP had a 350SLK at one of the events I attended this year and it acquited itself well i thought (yes, it had sticky tires on it) and given its softer approach to driving, the wife might prefer that too.

You're welcome Dave. I can't vouch for the source but things like this come up fairly often:

I've had one of these around for awhile as a casual driver.. although its 500, and an auto of course.. it gets down the road nicely when asked.

I really like the R129. I think its the best looking of the SL's. I find subsequent ones a bit too pointy in the nose. Too "FI" or McLaren inspired. Somehow the proportions of the Sacco designs look timeless

As most here know, I love the Miata platform. One of my race buddies (and a Porsche guy) has an NC as his daily driver. He's average size. But why not consider an NB?
