So we are finally back from the shakedown. Im pretty impressed with the car considering we just threw parts at it a few days before the race wrenching till the wee hours.
Stephen also did quite well considering he hasnt been on track in like 2 years. We placed 3rd in TTC. Car did well, but would do better w/ an alignment and bushing overhaul. Diff. would help also. I swapped my trunk/wing over for a session and it was good for a couple seconds! Not to mention it looked pretty baller.

So me and Dubs have been working long hours lately to get this car done for next weekend's race at VIR w/ NASA.
I tried to cut/notch while Stephen welded and that worked out great until we got to some of the compound joints. I can see now why some shops take "shortcuts" and dont have their bars all go into a single node. After messing up two bars, I gave up on that endeavor. Plus Stephen was much faster. I started working on all the other stuff that needed to be done like the rod bearings, oil pan baffle, etc etc. Ive updated some pictures to the Facebook album. You don't see too many TIG welded cages (I assume something that nice is TIG). Looks great.

Tnx. Eric is just making me look good. I'll freely admit thats one of the very few welds I tried to make 'pretty' - most of the others are not. Yes thats tig (IMO its really the proper way for most of the joints in a cage.) I tend to ramp the current up and move along feeding wire w/o much pulsing, so the 'stack of dimes' turns into a smoother bead. But its not as pretty. The one on the bottom of that pic is more my typ style. Working hanging upside down, sometimes over your head, sometimes curled into a little ball, often w/o a wrist rest to steady the torch and Im amazed I get them even remotely smooth sometimes. I tip my hat to the guys who weld pipe for a living and can pass X-ray inspection.
I'll also admit to using mig in some hard to reach areas like around the foot plates. The plates themselves are 100% miged to the car. I tried to tig those once upon a time and you just can't get the car clean enough (the back is often inaccessible or multiple layers of steel w/ ??? between them), and the oft popping and spitting just ruins a lot of tungstens & gas lens and leads to much cursing. Every time I do a cage I realize (again) how much darn work it is, but there is great satisfaction seeing it all come together.
