What do I expect at start up?
I had a local air cooled shop rebuild my 3.2 long block. Pistons and cylinders were reused, camshafts had pits so were reground to 964 grind, other than that all new rings, bearings, valve guides, valve springs, etc. I had a new Steve Wong chip programmed for the new camshafts, and my aftermarket exhaust. I still need to hook the battery back up but I reattached the all the parts and this week made all the connections in the car. I’ve read what seems like a ton of wrtiteups/opinions on initial break in period, running time, etc.
My question is, what can I expect at start up? Some say there may be a lot of smoke? Others say there is a sulfer smell? Can you guys that have done this tell me what is normal vs. abnormal at start up? Thanks

It'll probably smoke off oil that was used to put cylinders in and assembly lube and any residue from cleaning agents.
The wet part of the anti seize on the exhaust nuts will cook off. Stuff like that. Break in, someone else will have better info. |

I had almost the exact same build on my '87 3.2. It started up w/o issue, smoked lightly for a couple minutes and then cleared up and has run great since then. The 964 cams and Wong chip with large tube SS heat exchangers and free flow muffler make for a great combination. It pulls very nice right from the bottom of the scale.

Tito what muffler do you have? Mine is a 2in/2out but one mount got crusty and I need to replace it. I wanted megaphones but figured my wife and daughter might not ride with me if I did. My 11 year old boy would think it was awesome.

Check closely for fuel leaks, not as bad as some but the fuel system is a bit of an octopus. I like to build some oil pressure before firing the first time.

I have stock mufflers on both cars. Project has a two in one out, the 3.2 sc has one in one out. Not a fan of the louder mufflers personally. Car is loud enough inside as is. Keep a fire extinguisher handy but likely won’t be an issue. I would agree building up some oil pressure. Though the stuff they use during rebuilds is supposed to help that I think. It may take a little cranking to get it to fire and may cough a bit as fuel pressure builds. Keep an eye open for fuel leaks. Good luck.

So primed the oil, hooked the ignition wire back up, put the fuel pump relay back in and tried. It turns over but won’t fire. Sadly it’s been so long I can’t remember but should the fuel pump hum with the relay in and the key turned but not all the way to cranking? Should it hum while cranking? Or should it not hum at all?

It doesn’t appear to be getting gas. I pullled the fuel line feeding the fuel filter and no gas came out at all. I have an extra DME relay but of course don’t have an extra fuel pump relay. So I can’t try the easy fix.

Had that recently on my 88, replaced DME, new fuel pump, ended up crank sensor!

Did you cross the wires in the relay socket. Test that first. Verify battery voltage at 87a on the relay with car in on position. Then jumper between 87a and pin 30. You will here the fuel pump come on the.
