Oil Line replacement questions
Hi all, long time. Hope all are doing well.
Some time ago (2005 according to the pictures ), on really hot days my car started to run a bit hot (never overheating). Picture shows where it gets and stays at maximum. At this point I forget when I became aware of it, but the likely culprit seems to be a crushed oil line (supply to the front cooler). I've been putting this off long enough and have a little time where I might be able to tackle this. Just wanted to check a few details before I decide to do this myself and not take it to a shop. 1) Penetrating fluid and heat seem to be the secret to disconnecting the fittings. Given that there will be oil in the lines and oil with too much heat can be, uh, problematic, how much heat is too much? Heat just to the smoking point of the penetrating fluid? Is propane torch ok? Stupid question perhaps, but I generally like myself not on fire/blown up. That said, all previous posts point to the ease in breaking the thermostat ($400+) when doing this job. 2) Replacing the soft lines that connect the hard lines to the front cooler seems a prudent while you are in there activity, yes? 3) I know these can be repaired, but I don't have that setup to be able to do myself. New lines are $600 (each) at pelican. The rest of the line seems fine. Do any shops repair these things? Thanks as always for any advice or pointers.

Too bad you are in NY. Fixing a bent oil line is straight up when you have the space, tools and basic skills. Clean it up and out, Plug both ends with one end having a bike tire type fitting, heat the dent to "goot un hott", then pressurize the pipe while gently working the kink out with some flat jaw pliers.
Not stripping the thermostat housing is directly related to the time spent heating and soaking the big nuts. Is better to sacrifice the locking ring by cutting 3/4 the way through it with a Dremel and popping it apart with a cold chisel and a single hammer strike.

Kurt, thanks for the quick reply.
So the suggestion is to cut the nut approximately where the red circle is? Same on the front? I may try and remove the line this weekend. I've already started soaking with PB Blaster.

Soak, heat and torque. Repeat as needed. The key is to not load up enough torque that you strip off the soft threads on the thermostat valve body. The lock rings are part of the lines and less expensive than than the T stat body. All this stuff gets soaked in road salt, grime and time and becomes enlightened. That is to say it becomes "one" with itself. AlOx is harder than the base metals and a bit larger in volume than the base metal prior to oxidation. This makes the line locking rings weld to the T-stat body.

The entire procedure is somewhere on this site. You might recognize the guy doing the torch work. I have a couple of lines that I "fixed" out back if you don't want the hazel of fixing the originals.

Thanks to you and Kurt for the replies. I had already read the procedure for fixing the pipes in the sticky thread above. You and I also spoke about this a while back. Will attempt the disconnect this weekend. 30mm wench for @ front cooler and @rear t-stat, right? (I don't think I have that size so need to purchase). If I can get the oil line off, I may ask if I bring the line to DC if someone could help me fix (Parents are still in McLean so I'm down monthly). Payment I assume is still accepted in alcohol of choice and pizza around here?

I'll be driving to NY (Westchester) over Memorial Day weekend, likely in the Prius. Could see if the oil lines will fit (expect yes) and could bring up a fixed set and return down here with a "needing fixin'" set. Set it up between you and a source down here (who might have some out back) and I'll do the transportation. But any lines I transport MUST be completely oil-free and dry, please.

Send me a PM when you get the lines free. I am on the border of McLean on the Falls Gulch side.
